When can I cancel my car insurance company. Do I have to wait until it expires?

I am an insurance agent. You can canel your insurance at any time. If you have paid for the month and cancel during that month that you paid for, your policy will be canceled on a pro-rata basis and you will be given a refund for the days of the month that you didn't use. If you cancel your insurance and owe for a month they will send you a bill for the balance owed. You can cancel at any time. Just don't stop paying and never cancel without advising the company because they will let your insurance continue for a month or so and then bill you for the balance owed and then report you as canceled due to non-payment and that isn't good.
Just call or put it in writing to the company that you would like to cancel your policy on (blank) date. You don't have to provide a reason at all. Just remember that if your car is financed, it is in your contract with the finance company that you MUST keep your car insured. If they find out that you canceled your insurance they will place forced coverage on the vehicle and charge you for it and that normally is about 3X the normal cost of insurance and it doesn't include any liability coverage. They only add physical damage coverage and comprehensive coverage that protects the vehicle since they actually own it.

YES YOU CAN AND IF POSSIBLE GO TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY AND IF NOT CALL THEM AND GET A CONFIRMATION NUMBER OF THE CANCELLATION, FOLLOW UP WITH A LETTER TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY AS WELL, ALSO ASK THEM WHEN YOU WILL BE RECEIVING YOUR REFUND IF YOU PAID FOR IT IN FULL.

This is a BIG NO! If you want to save money, you can have your next insurance start date the day after your present insurance expires. Or, if you are cancelling because your current insurance doesn't have high enough coverage and you don't feel safe, then by all means start your new insurance earlier.

If you cancel it before your contract is up, then they will give you a fine, but you can still cancel it.
