When renting a car for 3 days can my own insurance cover damages?

The one think I want to add is Loss of Use and Loss of Income. Sometimes the rental company will included these types of damages. You normally need rental coverage on your own vehicle to cover loss of use, although I still would check with your agent and/or insurance company.

I would call the insurance Company and ask as all companies have there own rules. Your collision insurance may no be enough to cover the car you are renting.

While I'll admit that rental agency insurance is a rip off I will caution you to buy it.
In states like Florida with a lot of rentals, it often occurs that when you have an accident the rental company will collect the funds from your credit card and leave you to collect from the insurance company.
This does not sound all that tough until you realize that this will often max out you card and meals and hotel become impossible to purchase. Not only that the insurance laws in different states often leave you holding the cost of accidents that are not your fault.

One other aspect becomes that your insurance is subject to deductable which leaves a big chunk to bite off later.

Finally, a trick that a Las Vegas company pulled was an auto drop off without inspection immediately. About 6 weeks later I was being billed for a broken windshield , which did not happen while I had the car.
It seems that when a car gets damaged they like to go back to see who the last one was who did not purchase their insurance was and let them pick up the tab. It sweetens the bottom line with their carrier and leaves you to fight the battle. The methods they used to attempt to collect on that one were pretty disgusting as well and included credit collection agencies. Most people write off the $500 to replace the windshield and do not fight it until the end. They finally figured out that I was not going to roll over and just pay it and it ended up costing them more than their claim. This was a royal pain in the butt.

SO I now just assume the cost of the insurance when getting rate quotes and go with it.
It bites but then if there were no risk you would not need any insurance.

I have Platinum Mastercard and it has rental car insurance as one of its features. Check with your credit card company (call the customer service # on the back of the card) and call your insurance agent. Rental car insurance is usually a ripoff.

I believe it will. Most companies include that on their coverage.

most insurance companies will allow your policy to extend to non-owned vehicles aswell (among them rental cars).
I would still call my agent and double check.

yes, it usually does. i assume you mean car insurance.

also, if you pay with a credit card, usually there is built in insurance for using the card.
