When you have to renew your tag and you need a smog check and the DMV gives you a permit.?

How many days is that permit for? Are there any charges if you pass the expiration date?

Under the new law that took effect January 1, 2009 the DMV can issue you a 60 days Temporary Operating Permit upon payment of a $50.00 fee. This permit can be requested if your expiration date is within 60 days that the registration is due and you failed the smog check. There are no extentions given on the permit after the 60 days is over.

I think this depends on which state. I guess because you talk about smog, you mean California?
