Where and how to get an insurance for a borrowed car?

You have 4 options...

Option 1: If you have the 'drive other cars' extension on your policy then you will be allowed to drive your friends car (Third Party Only), but make sure you read the small print as some insurance companies will only allow you to use the DOC extension for emergency use only.

Option 2: Call your insurance company and see if they can add your friends car to your policy for a day.

Option 3: Ask your friend to add you as a named driver on their insurance policy (if you have an accident this will mean you have to claim on your friends policy).

Option 4: Get short term insurance for a day (or for however long you require it)

check your policy to see if you can drive someone elses car with their permission. if yes, then you will be covered but only 3rd party. if not, call your insurance and they will use your insurance to cover you for the day....usually free if your friends car has same size of engine or less.

I wanted to borrow my father in laws car as mine was off the road, as I was on my husbands insurance this didnt cover me to drive my father in laws car. I called my insurance company to ask if they would insure me for a couple of weeks and they wouldnt because I didnt own the car. I would check your insurance policy or check with your insurance company. Resulting this I had to catch the bus to work for 5 weeks.

you need to check your policy and your friends. yours may well cover you to drive other cars with third party cover (many do, but only if you are the policy holder, not a named driver) and his insurance may cover other drivers to drive the car, but will not necessarily. if they dont you can contact his insurer or your own and they can arrange it for you (contact them both to see whos cheapest!)

On a personal Auto ISO form, insured is "anyone using your auto", therefore you are an insured on your friend's policy. Now, since you are "insured". Your friend's insurance will pay for the liability damages and, if he has physical damage coverage and you damage his car, his company will pay for it. However if he doesn't have enough coverage, your insurance will kick in. Remember two rules:

Insurance follows the car
Owner's insurance is primary and your's "excess"

The owner's insurance will cover you (the standard policy covers another using the car with the owner's permission) and your policy will cover you as a back-up (it covers a loaned car, unless it's available for your regular use).

No. If you borrow his car with his permission, you are also borrowing his insurance. Insurance goes with vehicles, not with drivers.

The answer should be in your automobile policy that they send you when you sign up and start paying for the insurance. Should be a rather thick booklet of some sort.
