Who is at fault? i was involved in a rear end accident where i hit the back of a car causing a 3 car pile up?

Look at it this way.....lead car stops suddenly to avoid hitting a run away baby carriage. Does the accident still happen? Yep.

The lead car has the right to stop. Be it to make a left turn, turn into a driveway, stop because of a car in front of him or avoid a run away baby carriage. You have a duty to keep a safe distance between you and the car in front of you. Such that- the car in front of you can do an emergency stop and you don't hit him.

Ultimately, you were following too close, keeping an improper lookout.

Having an accident does not mean you are a bad person...or even a bad driver. It happens. But I expect your insurance company to pay the others for their damage/injuries.

Were there witnesses? What does the police report say? You can get a copy but there will be a small administrative fee. Did the person doing the u-turn get a citation? If so that is a strong indicator of fault. That's the good news. The bad news is you could be at fault as respects to the car in front of you for "traveling to close for conditions" In other words, had you maintained a safe distance between you and the car in front of you, your part of this accident would have been avoided. the content of the police report will weigh heavily in determining fault but on the surface it would appear you are at fault for hitting the car in front of you because you did not keep a safe distance.

What did the officer say. The insurance company in a situation like this will likely determine fault by the officer's report. If there was no officer, then you are likely at fault since you hit from behind.

You will probably be a fault for this, was everyone okay, just out of curiosity. My mom hit the back of a flat bed truck, she did not want her insurance rats to go uo and there was no damage to the back of the truck so she was able to leave the scene and they gave each other there phone number. She had to get a new bumper and grill which is going to cost 1250.00 better than a 500 dollar deductable and high insurance rates.

If you hit a car doing something illegal to start with, then I'll think it'll be that car's fault. Did you take pictures of the accident scene? And I'm assuming the force of impact pushed the car attempting to make the illegal u-turn into another car ahead of her or oncoming?

You're in a tight spot because normally the car from behind is found at fault. What did the police say? If you didn't get any tickets, then I'll think you'll have a good chance of fighting this. And insurance companies don't always agree with the police's determined of fault. It's up to insurance. Explain to your insurance company what happen.

If you want to play hard ball, I'll suggest to your insurance company that the driver that slammed on her breaks did it so you'll purposely hit her.
