Who is at fault in car accident?

I was driving at a speed of approx 15kmph when suddenly I bumped onto the back of a car in front of me, and the car in front of me, bumped onto another car.

The result = The first car had a broken bumper (SUV type)
The car in front of me had a damage hood and back
and the radiator bent that it even had a hard time running
again. (sedan type)
My car however, almost did not get anything but just a
little dent about 3 inches at almost edge of the hood.(SUV)

Question: According to the police I am the one at fault because according to the rule if the vehicles are all moving when the accident happened, the one who is in the last is liable.

Since this is my first time to be involved in a car accident I was totally shocked when it happened. And actually cant believe I was the one who cause the accident. Can anyone help me understand this scenario?

The person that rearends the car is always the one at fault even if the car you hit slammed on their brakes. You are suppose to leave enough room between the cars for sudden stops.

Yes, you caused the accident by failing to leave sufficient space between yourself and the vehicle in front. If you rear-end someone, 99% of the time it is your fault.

because you didnt stop you pushed the car you hit into the other car so your at fault,
weather the cars in front are stationary or moving it doesnt matter ,you will still be held liable, if a car behind you hit you and pushed you into the other cars then it would be their fault

you are seen as being in the wrong because you didn't leave a safe stopping distance between yourself and the car in front, the fact that you hit the car is evidence of this.

Also the sentence "suddenly I bumped onto the back of a car in front of me" suggests to me, you werent giving the road your full attention.

It is called "failure to keep your distance" or following too closely.

It is your fault. From now on keep a safe distance between you and the car in front of you. And, make sure you pay full attention to your driving. Your lucky that your insurance company will take care of everything. I just hope you have enough coverage on your auto insurance to take care of the 2 cars are there damaged. By that I mean I hope the dollar amount of your coverage is enough.

Well there's nothing to understand. You were liable because:

1- You were the one that created the 3 car accident (bumper cars).
2- You were probably not paying attention to the flow of traffic, or possibly did not notice they were slowing down.

Words of advice. If the sun was in your eyes (literally), you should have acknowledged the cops, or if the brake lights on the proceeding vehicle were not working. Therefore your insurance won't kill your rates.
