Who is responsible for making the law that requires US drivers to have insurance?

I can only gues what you're ranting and raving about...butwhat makes you think you 'get the money back?' Seriously...insurance is a non-tanglible product that you buy IN THE EVENT you need it. If you don't use it during the policy period, you don't get your 'money back.' If you do not abide by the terms of the CONTRACT, you don't get coverage. You say it's a waste of money, but wait until you kill some innocent driver or pedestrian and you don't have money to pay for the destruction you caused to that family and you get sued and your assets are seized...then you'll be crying about 'oh what do i do? i don't have insurance!'

Auto insurance is not a waste of money. It is not a savings account, you cannot make withdrawals whenever you want. The law is there to protect the people you injure, not to provide you with money whenever you want it.

Well, if you don't want to pay for insurance then...in California...all you need to do is deposit $35,000 to the DMV and then you are insured. But what if you hit some and the damage is over $50K...what are you going to do??? Or a uninsured motorist hits your car...how and who is gonna repair your car (both of you don't have insurance)...or when your car is stolen, how are you going to pay to get a new one to get to and from work??? Insurance, yes makes people careless about driving safe, but it's a good investment....I've been in a few accident some at fault and some not...it just makes life much easier when "accidents" happens.

You are not required to have insurance to cover yourself, the requirement is that you have liability insurance to cover others that you might injure, or whose property you might damage.

i hate paying for insurance too.. but with insurance.. you dont need it.. until you REALLY need it

be thankful that if you ever are involved in a legal dispute over an accident... that policy will be worth every penny.

So if you hit and kill a 35 year old heart surgeon, how do you expect to cover your losses in the lawsuit without insurance? If somebody (never identified) torches your brand new car in the driveway the day after you bring it home, how do you expect to buy another one? You are all worked about this, but haven't a clue what insurance is all about.

I understand your frustration, car insurance seems to be a rip off when you don't have to make claims on it. Remember insurance is a two way thing. You have to have it, the other driver has to have it. If you don't have it, you could be sued. If the other driver doesn't have it, how would you recover your losses when he or she is at fault if they have no assets to win in a suit?

Insurance is a transfer of risk. Having and keeping insurance shows that you are being financially responsible. If you can not afford the insurance, you should be taking the bus or walking. They have the money, however, they are only going to pay what your policy allows in the terms and conditions.

The best thing to do is drive without insurance until you get 2 warnings.

That way you can be without it for like 30-40 months.

Also, if you dont have insurance, you drive more carefully, thus improving your chances.
