As I understand it your Car Insurance becomes null when you drive under the influence of alcohol.
Who would pay the damages to the victim's family?
These are usually high amounts but you never hear of anyone losing their house etc over this.
Anyone who works in an insurance company out there who knows the answer?

Although the insurance may become null and void to the drunk and he couldn't collect anything as a result of his actions, it doesn't become null and void to the parties he has injured, so the insurance would pay up to the limits of the policy. In the event there was no insurance if you have uninsured motorist coverage your insurance would step up and then go after the assets if any of the drunk to be reimbursed. If there were more liabilities than his policy would cover, again if you have under insured coverage your policy would make up the difference. Otherwise you would have to sue the drunk for the difference. |

The insurance becomes null and void in the case of the drunk driver, but they will pay out to injured parties other than the drunk. Theoretically, the insurance company can then sue the drunk. |

yeah its a good question ive always wondered this too i think everyone pays some kind of price except the drunken driver who goes to jail gets his nice warm own cell with dvd , pc. television , gym ,hot meals ,and a job to earn money.this is what happens in britain anyway. |

I presume you are in America. In the UK the victim's family don't get damages anyway but the victim does get free medical care on the NHS. |

Your car insurance doesn't automatically become null and void if you have an accident and your under the influence of alcohol. Your insurance company may drop you afterwards, but it isn't automatic. More than likely though that person's premium would be surcharged extensively unless of course the person has a history of DWI, than they might be dropped.
The insurance company would pay whatever monetary limits have been set on the policy itself. That wouldn't stop the deceased's family from suing the driver further in civil court for wrongful death. |

Depends where you live. 3rd party insurance is compulsory in some states in Aus and this pays out the injured party. Long involved process. |
