Why can't I insure myself to drive my mums car for a week or so?
Find answers to your legal question.

Why can't I insure myself to drive my mums car for a week or so?

Has anyone any ideas, I have my own fully comp policy and so does my mum but both her insurance company and mine say it can't be done. My car has broken down and thats the reason I want to do it to get to work.

My insurance is not with a cheap company at all

You can insure yourself, that requires public liability indemnity to be placed in a bonded account.

But i suspect you want to transfer your fully comp policy to your mums car for a week.

That cannot be done while her policy exists, you can only have one insurance for a car. If you had 2, who would be the prime liable company ?

You either need to get on her policy as a named driver with fulyl comp ( not likely if you are under 25 ). Or cancel her policy and you insure it as the main driver ( but not registered keeper )

For a week, the excess and admin charges will force you to re-think - it would be cheaper to hire a car.

edit: THe "under 25" is the crucial fact people needed. I bet many of the above woudl change thier answer now knowing you are under 25.

Most insurance companies do not allow named drivers to run on fully comp if you are under 25, nor do they allow you to transfer your fully comp status to another car.

If they did, all sub-25 year olds would have a 1.1 Fiesta sat in the drive as thier main insurance while they drove a second Mitsu Evo10 as a named driver..

Look at the wording in your policy,if it states you may drive any insured vehicle not owned by you ,then you are ok.If your mothers insurance policy has you as a named driver ,,costs extra,,,then you can drive it.JUst check the conditions and terms.

Because both insurance companies are staffed by lazy idiots. Go to Norwich Union and set it up on line. http://www.norwichunion.com/short-term-insurance/index.htm?source=x168&entry=10042

Probably because your insurance is with companies who only do the basics and do them cheaply.

If you had paid more for your insurance you would have gone with companies who offer the extras, such as the one you require.

You can cancel your insurance and go with a company who offers what you want, or stay with cheapest and get the cheapest service.

As per Jed's answer, most fully comp policies allow you to drive any other vehicle not owned by you - check your policy wording.
Otherwise, just get your mum to add you as a named driver.

Check with her insurance she can just add you on as a driver> They don't insure for a week> Your both insured and over 21>

You're going about it the wrong way. You cannot have two policies on the same vehicle. What you need to do is ask Mum to get her insurers to add you to her policy. She will almost certainly have to pay more, and doubtless you'll be covering that . . . .

normally your policy will cover you to drive another persons car, but for third party cover only. Additionally, fully comprehensive insurance normally covers other people driving your car - again third party only.

I dont know why they wont give you full insurance for a week...seems a bit mean! I did add my boyfriend onto my own insurance at one point (not when buying the policy, but later) and it cost an additional £100, although when I renewed my insurance I added him as an additional driver and it actually reduced my premium. So god knows what goes on at the car insurance offices!

Check your car insurance to see if you can drive any car. Mine does but it's only third party cover to drive someone else's car. If in doubt ring your insurance company and ask. Most fully comp policies include this anyway, as long as you have the permission of the car owner.
I drive other cars with my fully comp insurance and so does my husband. Just check the wording I'm sure you'll find you can drive your Mum's car, otherwise she could add you to her insurance policy as a named driver.
Hope this helps and have a good week. ;-)

Edit. Which evil know-it-all troll is giving the thumbs down?

Good question...

if you want to drive her car you will need to be added to her policy as a temporary additional driver. you wont be able to insure her car under your policy as you need to be the registered owner and keeper of the vehicle which you wont be and therefore have no insurable interest in the vehicle. check your certificate of insurance to see if you have driving other cars extention, this will enable you to drive her car but bear in mind it is third party only, so if you have an accident in her car, the damage to her car will not be covered.

Thats odd, I have insured my sisters car in the past for the same thing and had no issues. If your mom has the car insured wouldn't the car be insured?

Anyone your Mom gives permission to drive her car is covered! Don't worry about it, either way you will be covered to drive her car!
