Companies that ask for it use it to run your credit history. Some Companies believe that the better your credit score is, the better driver you are.
Personally, I think that is B/S as I have bad credit and I am a good driver (no tix on record!) |

Deadbeats have horrible driving records (If you have bad finances, you are stressed out even when you drive or you dont care how you drive). People who pay their bills on time have great driving records and dont want to get sued |

If they are asking it's because they run a credit report. You'll have to give it at some point, although most insurers do not list all digits now, only the last 4 and then verify your information when you call by asking that. It's recorded somewhere but is not there when others pull up your information. That's a pretty standard thing now. |

Due to the Patriot Act, they must ask for SSN to verify you are not on the governments list of known terrorists, it has absolutely nothing to do with your rates, rates are based on age, marital status, and driving record only. |

- Insurance scoring systems can penalize consumers even for reasonable credit usage. The score is not quite the same as your FICO score, used by lenders.
- Scoring methods and useage vary from company to company. You can't predict how your score will affect your premiums.
- Insurance companies are not legally required to divulge scores.
- The FTC is looking into the possibility that insurance scoring systems may discriminate. |
