Why do car insurance companies not cover theft from a broken sunroof?

Because car insurance covers the CAR. If you had "stuff" in the car, that someone took, that would be covered under your renters or homeowners insurance.

Do you mean things were stolen out of your vehicle THROUGH the sunroof? In that case, personal items are not covered under your AUTO policy...they would be covered under your homeowner's or renter's insurance if the value is more than your deductible. Auto insurance covers only the physical automobile.

or

Do you mean that the sunroof got broken when someone broke into your car? In that case, the cost of repairing/replacing might be under your deductible.

As the last poster pointed out, if it was already broken, it would be like leaving your car doors open.

As for many insurance companies not covering theft through sunroofs, there are a couple reasons:

Sunroofs increase visibility into a person's car, and are easier to get into without detection. If someone breaks a sunroof, they can walk away, wait to see if someone saw them break it, then go back and unlock the doors. There is no glass laying around, so many people will ignore it.

If the glass was actually broken, then you would be best to fight it, unless there is a clause already in your policy. If there IS a clause, the company will tell you, more or less, that you signed the contract, and it's up to you to read it.

if it was not stock and added latter then it is considereed a modification and most wont cover damage/theft due to a modification

By having a broken sunroof is like leaving the door wide open w/ a sign that says "steal me"

You probably have a No Forcible Entry clause in your policy, meaning if they didn't have to force their way into your car to steal it, then a theft would not be covered.

Had you actually READ your policy, you would have known this, but since you didn't.............

If it's already broken then it would be because of negligence. The insurance company would probably say that the sunroof should have been maintained and if it was, then the car would not have gotten broken into.

If someone broke into your functioning sunroof, I'd fight it.
