Why do insurance companies need to know about speeding ticket?

Why do insurance companies need to know when you want to be
insured with them about a speeding ticket. I got court speeding 4 years ago doing 50 in a 30!. I got a £60 fine + £120 for court fees and 6 points! I haven't been speeding since so why should I declare my speeding fine from 4 years ago to the insurance? After I got fined my insurance for my then 10 year old 1.6 Ford Escort LX 90 BHP shot from £350 too £780!!!! Norwich Union!!! I obviously found another quote as I was not prepared to pay Subaru Impreza prices for an old banger and left rip off Norwich. So why do they ask for this info? is it realy daylight robbery or is this like a punishment? Please let me know thanks.

50 in a 30?! Personally, I think you deserved what you got. Imagine if you had hit a pedestrian at that speed.

No, the insurance companies are not ripping you off - they are assessing your risk as being high - which it obviously still is if you think you were hard done by.

A speeding ticket indicates you don't obey the traffic laws which means you are more likely to have an accident than someone without a ticket. Higher risk = higher insurance premium.

In the US some insurance companies do not consider tickets older than three years in giving a quote. Some others go back five years. I don't know about the UK but I suspect it's similar. That's why you should get several quotes before purchasing insurance. Because of the different underwriting policies one company may charge considerably less than some other one for the same driver.

You can't expect to break the law & not suffer the consequences. Speeding convictions must be declared as with any other motoring offences. That's so the insurance company know you're a higher risk & charge you accordingly.

It is not a punishment as such. The insurer has to do what he can to assess the level of risk he is covering. Someone doing 50 in a 30 limit is hardly a safe risk for an insurer is he, be honest. If you would do 50 in a 30 area just what will you be doing on a motorway?

as most people have points nowadays , yes it is a rip off . speeding does not make you a bad driver even so called " highly trained " police have points . its just another money making scam by rip off insurers . one recently asked me if I smoked ! I told them it was none of their business and if they continued asking such personal questions i would take my custom elswhere , they then turned very apologetic .cheeky gits. as for Norwich Union i am surprised they are still in business.
