Why do people block out their number plates on ebay?

i am more inclined not to buy from some one like that,

with the dvla data base you can run a check on any car with the number plate maybe that is the reason

I have a show car, and any time I put my cars pictures up the internet I block out my plates. theres millions of things that could happen, like someone hating on you and calling the cops saying they seen you driving like an idiot. people making fake plates, trying to find out where you live ect. of course if they wanted it they could easily go out to a parking lot or whatever, but there way more people able to see it on the internet. I really dont think it a huge deal, but its just more a precaution than anything.

stop people cloning their number plates and running up speeding tickets parking tickets etc

yes you could get a number plate from a car park . but would you want to display your numberplate to millions of people all over the world on the web . think about it

The thing is, if a criminal clones a plate from a car in a car park, they don't know who it's registered to, making it more risky if they get stopped by police, as the first thing the police will want to know is who the car is registered to.

By covering a number plate on eBay the sellers are not only protecting themselves, but also the buyers. I would be very wary of buying a vehicle from eBay that has its number plate on display.

If a criminal clones your number plates and knows your address then if they get stopped by the police they can pretend to be you (or say they just purchased the car from you) - the police will then check on the PNC (Police National Computer) to see who the car is registered to and see that the criminal has given the correct name and address of the registered keeper, so will most likely let them go on their way.

The criminal could quite easily find out an eBay members name and address, which will also probably be the same name and address that their car is registered to.

Yes, but if they see a motor they fancy stealing, if they can trace the address, they can just go and get it, no need for paypal.

I would ask them what they are trying to hide! If I tell my insurance company the number of the car I am considering buying, when they quote me for insurance, they can also confirm the car is not on any damaged or stoled list.
I really wonder what they think they are achieving, by not showing their number..?
