a 70mph A-Road dual carriageway is barely much difference from a motorway other than obviously being an A-Road and normally only 2 lanes whereas most motorways have 3 lanes or in some cases 2 or 4 and therefore wonderin what differnece it makes between not being allowed on one but allowed the other.

In the "olden days" (which, lets be honest, was when most of our driving laws were established, like the 70mph motorway limit), there was a big difference between motorways and a-roads. Pretty much anything which was built to allow cars to travel quickly became a motorway. Sadly, a number of events like the protests at Twyford Down means that using the word 'motorway' is like committing political suicide (environmentalists and NIMBYs will go off one one), so instead lots of very high-quality a-roads have cropped up.
To give you an idea how muddy the water is, part of the A27 has four lanes on each side with a hard shoulder, all built to motorway standards, but because it's an a-road even mobility scooters are (and have been) allowed to do it. On the other hand, part of the M58 is a two-lane single carriageway with no hard shoulders but it's a motorway. |

At 70 MPH it is far easier for an instructor to watch 2 lanes than 3 or 4.

Whatever the speed limit, it should be part of the test. Motorway drivers have shocking methods. Many would fail a retest. |

Personally I think after passing the driving test, they should make it compulsory to have motorway lessons. |

be carefull on this one you might find dual carriageways in biult up areas are restricted to 30 mph . i got a speeding ticket for doing 42 mph on what i though twas a 40 mph dual carriage way .you will find most are restricted to 40 mph |
