Why do we need auto insurance?

In Wisconsin auto insurance has become mandatory today. From a practical stand point, why would we even need auto insurance? Most accidents are minor, and if someone gets a fender bender or a dent in their car from time to time, just put some duct tape on it and let it go.

Last time I was in an accident, I had full coverage and I still had to shell out 500 dollars for a deductable, and pay for my own rental car since it would cost extra and I was already payin 200 a month on a car for insurance which was more than enough. I just had a broken headlight and the repair shop found enough excuses to charge the insurance 4500 to fix it. Insurance doesn't even cover the costs of engine repair, exhaust, oil changes, transmission flushes - only on cars that are in accidents and then only when you have full coverage and high monthly payments do you ever get your money's worth.

you answered the question yourself. most accidents are minor and could be handled by the people involved. but insurance is there for when a major accident happens, which we can not predict. maybe you randomly have a seizure and hit 5 parked cars. maybe a drunk driver hits your car and drives off before you can get his plates. these are situations where having insurance will pay, when an individual would not be able to afford the damages.

good drivers still need car insurance. just like healthy people should still have health insurance just in case they get hit by a falling safe while walking down the street, you know?

You've never had a car totaled I presume, if you had then maybe your outlook would be a little different.

I had my first car totaled, and my insurance took care of it and salvaged the car for parts. I was paid $2k more than I ever would have received had I sold the car before the wreck.

Insurance should be mandatory, you see what happens when one person gets in a wreck with another person, only mr retard driving the car at fault doesn't have insurance and the person he hits get seriously injured...No big deal right? Hospital bills pay for themselves.

Here's insurance in a nutshell.
1.) The deductible is the amount you have to spend before the insurance company will start paying, just like with any other kind of insurance. If you don't like your current deductible you can get a lower one but it will raise the cost of your insurance.
2.) Liability covers you if you cause a wreck, lets say you hit someone and you don't have insurance you leave yourself wide open to the other party suing you.
3.) Comprehensive covers you if your car gets messed up by forces beyond your control, like hailstorms or a tree branch falling on your car.
4.) Collision covers you if you cause a wreck and you want your car fixed then collision takes care of it.
5.) Car insurance is not there to maintain and repair your vehicle your out of luck on that, but if you do want some level of coverage for any mechanical woes that may come up there are any number of automotive warranty companies you can contact that for a monthly fee cover most of the repair cost but they still don't cover maintenance stuff.
6.) If you get hit by someone without insurance you can have uninsured/underinsured driver added to your policy which covers you if another party causes the wreck and they don't have insurance. This covered my a$$ last year when I had my wreck and the other driver wasn't insured.
