Why is automatic car insurance more than a manual car insurance?

I always thought it was because the cars tending to cost more therefore their replacement cost was higher.

If you're comparing two identical cars, one with an automatic, one with a standard, the one with the automatic may cost more to insure, but it's because it's worth more, not just because it has an automatic transmission.

If you were comparing two the same except one had manual windows and the other had the trim package with electric locks and windows, it would cost more too, but because of the VALUE, not really the accessories.

didn't think it was, i've got both and have never really noticed a difference.

EDIT: i've just looked throuh my policies and i would say there is no difference because one is an auto.

by the way, thanks to those they say i'm a rubbish driver who doesn't know or pay attention to the road conditions because i drive an automatic sometimes. I never knew that, cheers.

When i get in my manual cars, am i still rubbish or is there some magic that instantly plants a "decent driver" probe in the back of my head ?? Just wondering.

I think the real reason is likely to be that an automatic version of any given car cost more to replace, and cost more to fix.

This is another of those questions that is in the " a friend of a friend who knows someone else" category. Wheres the evidence, some actual , verifiable proof !. I`ve never heard of there being any difference between a manual and auto on otherwise IDENTICAL specification !

Like someone else I have never heard of this, however logic would say that this is for the same reason that insurance to drive a Rolls Royce costs more then for a 10 year old Chevy.

The replacement and repair costs are the primary factor in the matter and these are definately factored into the costs. Other factors that I know about are specifc car models (some cars are stolen more then others and some are downright moving targets) other cars are extreeeeeeemly expensive to repair - for example the fiberglass bodies on Corvettes and so they move up a few notches on the scale.

If you are not sure about the costs for your specific car, you should contact your agent and discuss the figures.

because it cost more to repair an automatic transmission then a manual car's transmission.
the more luxury items you put on a car the more it will cost if you have to repair the car or when it is totaled

it isnt more to insurance..

this week gone from a manual 1.0 litre to a 1.2 automatic, and insurance hasnt changed paying the same price.....

so i dont know who told you this, but there is no difference, in fact for me its cheaper !!

It's becuase cars with automatic transmissions are more expensive than cars with manual transmissions. So if the insurance company has to pay a repair claim, it will cost more to fix the automatic car (assuming there is damage to the drivetrain). Automatic cars arent always more expensive. It depends on the car. Also, the increase in insurance premium is very small if there is a difference.

Insurance costs are partly based on the value of a car, as an automatic usually costs more than a manual to buy new there is a certain amount of logic in the insurance being slightly more expensive. This is generally carried over to the secondhand market where autos can fetch more money than manuals simply because they are rarer in this country.

It may also be possible that autos cost more to insure because they are more likely to be involved in "self inflicted" accidents, when people who are not used to them get out of the car and leave it in gear for example, but that is just my theory.

Because it takes less skill & ability to drive an automatic, thereby indicating that teh driver isn't too good, hence a higher premium.

Might sound unfair and unjust, but it is a fact, I'm afraid.

Statistically automatic drivers crash more often and are more of a liability.

Manual drivers tend to be those who understand how to drive a car and can control it in ways that an automatic driver can't. Also you can't talk on a cell phone, do your makeup, eat a lunch, or otherwise distract yourself while driving an automatic since it requires both hands (and both feet).

The automatic is idiot friendly, so idiots drive it and they crash.

I guess statistically they are in more accidents. You get to use the engine for braking in a manual and have to pay more attention.

Only an idiot dives an automatic as they are more dangerous than a proper car. Over 5 times more likely to crash when driving.
