Why is it that the fine for not having car insurance is far less than BUYING car insurance?

I am completely legal by the way, I have car insurance and don't plan on driving around without it! But when looking in the paper I saw people with fines for not having car insurance at like £100?! No wonder they don't use it! If it was DOUBLE what the insurance should be then that would stop a lot of them!
It just annoys me because I pay £50 a month (new driver) with a total of £550, when those who don't have it only pay £100.
I just think simple things like higher fines would stop them!

Agree entirely with your views. It is crazy, but then again it is Britain as run by the goodie-goodies, where everybody who does wrong is right and benefits from it,and those that live by the law are regarded as stupid!! |

It's not the fine, it's the points you get on your licence, if you're found driving with no insurance, you'll get at least 6 points, with an IN-10 code next to them, this pretty much doubles the insurance premiums, So the fine may not sound like much, but the increase in the cost of your insurance does have a major effect. |

i am always amazed by this, some people only get a £100 fine for having no licence, insurance or tax and then are given 3 points on their licence that they haven't got, i think your right they should be charged for each offence double of what it would have cost them, and then should be made to pay for lessons and a test for them to obtain a licence so the points can be added. |

Here in Texas many municipalities have made it more expensive to get caught without insurance than it would be to just buy a basic liablilty policy and guess what? A person can even make small mothly payments for the insurance. One can't do that with a ticket.
The cities here in Texas can set the amount of a no insurance ticket, plus they add the cost of the State fine and some will even tow your car. Plus they will file with the State to have your license suspended the reinstatement fee for that is $100 just by itself plus one has to provide the state with proof of valid current insurance before they get there license back.
So in a nut shell getting caught driving without insurance here in Texas can easily result in over $1000 of out of pocket expense for the first offence, where as the average driver here in Texas can get a liablitly only policy for about $500 per year, more or less depending on certian factors. But it's still way cheaper than getting tickets, fines, car towed, suspended license per incident and all that.
Unfortunatly here in Texas this fact still does not seam to register with some of our dumb drivers. I think it partially has to do with fact that the State of Texas wont allow a person to have a license here if they do not have a Social Security Number, hence they in most cases they can't get insurance. This creates problems here in Texas because of the large number of Illegal alliens we have here. Result, lot's of uninsured drivers. However, some carries here in Texas have started to offer liabilty only insurance to non licensed drivers but it carries a huge surcharge, but even that is less expensive than the alltenative.
Anyway sorry about the long speach. But your right higher fines might stop some of them but like here in Texas there are all types of other reasons why it would not work. I think it's more up to how responsible the individual is? |

Fine should be double cost of having insurance, but no matter how logical us law abiding citizens are the ars*hole politicians will take no notice. |

I totally sgree with you. I've worked in insurance for last 10 years & i have been asked this question so many times. Trouble is when these people do decide to get insurance it's astronomical due to the conviction, so then they don't bother again. It's a stupid world. |

It's not less here in the U.S. (Illinois). The mandatory minimum fine for not having basic liability insurance is $500. I only pay $130 for 6 months of coverage. So i believe that your theory of having higher fines makes much sence. |

I once drove without insurance and was pulled over, had to have my truck tolled home because they would not allow me to drive it, I would have payed at least 500 plus court cost but showed up in court with new insurance. you can also get jail time where I live |

That is true, but also has 8 point penality, which increases insurance and if you get caught again, lost licence. If an accident happens with no insurance, you are liable for the damages and costs...If you were to kill someone, 15years manslaughter charge if no insurance, accident or not!! The fine is less, but the concquences are far higher!!! Happy, safe driving!! |

In the United States, most states fines are far higher than what you stated. Usually, the fine is around $500.00. |

Mandatory $1000 in NYS if you get caught! And guess what?? The paper is full of offenders all the time! I guess that's too low also!!!!!!!! Maybe 3-5 years in the pokey would gain compliance???????? |
