Why is my insurance company investigating my car theft?

Insurance fraud costs us all billions of dollars. Companies are always on the lookout. Any claim that doesn't quite fit the norm gets investigated. You may not even be in that position. They grab random files for investigation as well. Do not get a lawyer unless they actually accuse you of fraud. Getting a lawyer in advance will make it look like you have gone on the offensive to hide wrongdoing. When I had an injury claim, I found out I was investigated behind the scenes. I had nothing to hide so the investigator took hidden video once, made his report, and they never bothered me again. As I am a licenced broker, I have seen claims investigated before. Only one was ever denied, and that guy made the mistake of giving me a different story than the one he gave the adjuster, causing him to be thoroughly investigated.

It is common practice to investigate a crime. car thefts are costing us alot of money and wasted police time etc. if you did nothing wrong dont worry it should come out.

I understand your frustration. I dont agree with the insurance company but they do that to see if the owner (in this case you) have driven the car somewhere and then broke the column to make it look like someone stole it. Since you say it was stolen then when the locksmith looks at it will be able to tell because there will be markings on the edges of the key hole so I would just relax and go with the flow for right now. If they come back with something else then I would suggest to have some one else come in and inspect your car and then take the insurance company to court.

Apparently, this company has had issues with false stolen car claims, or they don't want to have issues. Maybe your situation raised some red flags regarding the theft. I'm guessing the car has some value, and the insurance company wants to be sure they aren't being ripped off. Asking for phone records raises red flags with me, possibly they suspect a known auto thief took the car, and are checking to see if you know or had contact with the individual. They definately don't believe you, an attorney may be needed to help you with this.

They're idiots that's why. Sweetie, it's not you. They have to cover their own butts before they cut a check. My mom was in an accident, her car was totaled and she ended up in Intensive Care for 6 weeks. Her car insurance company accused her of arranging the accident. She's 71 years old! Some guy hit her and they blame her! They're all _ _ _ holes!!

There are some companies that have "accident forgiveness" and do not raise your rates if you have an accident...I think Allstate is one. You might want to look into their policies.
