Will I get penalized for having expired tabs for 1 year, in Washington State?

I am about to put my car in storage for 1 year. The tabs are due at the end of July. My car will not be on the road at all and tabs will be expired during this time. Will there be any penalty for this when I bring it back to the tabs renewal department? In Washington State.

You should go to the motor vehicle dept and tell them you want to register it NON-OP for a year. It will be a lot cheaper when you return it to service. There will be no penalties, and few fees. |

Washington State will collect the arrears taxes and registration fees before issuing new tags. |

When you have plates, you must have insurance. If you cancel your insurance, or let it lapse, your license will get suspended because they will assume that you are driving the car w/o insurance. Furthermore, (at least in NY), as a civil penalty, they will suspend your license for an additional period equal to the amount of time that the insurance lapsed until you get it again. (If your insurance is lapsed and you still have the plates for say 6 months, then when you get insurance, your driving privilege will then start an additional 6 month suspension). Turn the plates in! |
