Will insurance pay for something that is your fault?
|
My husband hit the wall backing out of our driveway. The side headlight is dangling and there is a dent and paint scrapped off. We have insurance that provides coverage for collison, comprehensive, and property damage. Will the insurance company pay for the repairs since he is at fault or will we have to pay for it ourselves. Also, will that incident increase the premium if he remains on the insurance?

This will be covered by the comprehensive portion of your policy. Comprehensive covers all damage not occurred in a normal liability collision type situation.
As far as the premiums, that all depends on the insurance company your personal driving histories. If you've been a customer for a while and this is your first claim, it *shouldn't* go up, but that is not a guarantee it won't. However if you feel they raise your rates unfairly, my advice is to go shopping for a new insurance company. |

As long as it was an accident then yes, they will pay cost of repairs less your collision deductible. |

As long as the damages are accidental in nature and not on intentionally, the collision portion of your policy will pay for the vehicle damages less your deductible.
As another poster explained your rates will go up. In order to Get an estimate for the car damages. That will help you decide if you should report it to your insurance. If you have a $500 collision deductible and the damages are $880.00 you might want to just pay the extra $380 out of your pocket instead of having the company pay you. Paying the $380.00 yourself will probably save you more than that in extra premiums over the next 2 or 3 years.
If the car damages are way in excess of your deductible then the answer depend on whether you can afford to pay thousands of dollors for the repairs out of your own pocket. |

It is a collision claim. Your insurance is there to pay for these stupid things that we do from time to time!! |

Yes, they will pay for it. But, it counts as an accident & he will have to pay a higher insurance rate for 3 to 5 years. You may want to try a website that compares multiple companies at once to get you the best price. I am paying less than ½ after I did.

An at fault accident usually raises your rates for at least 3 years. If you have collision coverage, your damages are paid for by the insurance company when you've met the deductible. Collision covers your vehicle regardless of fault.
If the wall he hit belongs to someone else & is damaged, your liability for property damage will cover the damage up to your policy limit. It doesn't matter who it belongs to.
If the wall he hit belongs to you you can file a homeowners claim but chances are your rates will rise there too. |

Dallas is wrong, it is collision coverage that will pay. Comprehensive coverage pays for "other than collision" which is fire, theft, vandalism, etc. Collision coverage is for at fault accidents, mostly. If you submit the claim your insurance will pay for the damages, less your deductible. If your insurance pays over a certain amount (you will have to check with your agent to find out what this is), the accident will likely be surchargable for 3 years. The surcharge will be added on your next renewal & charged for 3 annual terms (or 6 terms if a 6 month policy). If the damage is not much more than your deductible & the wall belonged to you, I would consider paying for this yourself. This is because on every renewal, your company looks at your claims & driving history and if you have had a few incidents over the last 3 - 5 years, they may nonrenew your policy, this would put you in a high risk category (with premiums to match) for at least 3 (sometimes 5) yrs until your claims/violation record becomes "clean" again. It may not be worth taking the chance by putting this in. |

The wall meaning, a retaining wall? The wall of the garage??
Your auto insurance will pay for the damage to the car, less your collision deductible.
Auto Property Damage does not apply, as it only covers "damage to other people's property" and "the wall" I am presuming, belongs to you.
If the wall is to the garage, the homeowners policy will likely cover it, subject to the deductible - although newer homeowners policies are starting to exclude vehicular damage caused by a household member driving. So it might not.
and NOTHING will cover a retaining wall.
Yes, if the auto repairs are over the surcharge threshhold in your state, this will be an "at fault" accident and subject to surcharge. If he DOESN'T remain on the insurance, then he can't drive - when you exclude your spouse, no matter what happens, the insurance won't pay. If he totalled your car - it wouldn't pay. If he totalled another car - you'd be writing a check. VERY dangerous to exclude a driver. |
