Will my car insurance be invalidated?
|
Phoned my car insurance company today to report a minor bump. The guy asked if I had any points on my license and I told him that yes I have 3 points for speeding. He said that they had no record of this. I don't know why they have no record of this but that's not really the point. Will they try to claim that my insurance is invalid? If they do try this will I be able to claim a refund as I will have been paying them money for literally nothing for the past four years? Additional Details I'm pretty sure the points were given within my insurance with this company otherwise I would have declared it on taking out the policy...

No, you paid them for insurance, and they provided coverage. They can't go back & say it's not valid just because they didn't check your driving record. (They can do that, you know). My insurance company routinely checks driving records, and who's licensed at my address. Don't worry about it. It's not an issue. And for 3 points, they're probably not going to drop you at the next renewal either. Just relax, and don't lie to them, and everything will be ok. |

I think some of the people answering are missing an important point. You say that if they will void your insurance you will have been paying them for nothing for the last 4 years.
The insurance company say that they have no record of your points, well they would not have if you did not have the points when they first insured you. It appears that you got the points at some time since your original application. BUT each year when you get your renewal notice you are asked somewhere in the small print if there have been any changes! It is always advisable to immediately advise your insurers as soon as you get any points. If you fail to do that then you must declare them at renewal time. As you have failed to do this they are within their rights to make your policy void and not pay out on this claim as you failed to notify them of information that is pertinent to them when assessing your premium level.
Incidentally, no, you would not be able to get a refund - they covered you in good faith during the last 4 years, the only refund that you would get if they make your policy void would be a refund of the premium percentage between the time they voided the policy and the end of the 12 month insured period. |

Most insurance companies won't cancel you for one speeding ticket, unless you were going much faster than the limit. They will probably increase your rates. |

To deal with the doom-mongers, no they won't invalidate your insurance. In any case they can't invalidate it in retrospect.
You are supposed to tell them of any material events (which includes getting points) which occur. However, these days insurers allow the odd relatively minor matter such as one speeding conviction. It may, or may not, increase your premium on renewal but that's all. No doubt they'll point out your sin pretty heavily. |

You say that you are sure that the points you received were during the period of insurance with your present company. BUT... did you tell them that you had received the points?, because no-one else will. It is your responsibility.
It's unlikely that they will refuse the claim, unless you were speeding again when the incident ocurred, but you may be asked to pay an extra premium for the period from getting the points up to your next renewal. (i.e. the period that they may have increased the premium because of the award of the points) |

As long as you have paid for the insurance coverage and are up to date with that, you should be covered. But now that they know you have points for speeding, your rates will probably go up. |
