Look at your vehicle registration document - there is a section there that you fill in and send to the DVLA when you are scrapping the car.
I part exchanged my car but the car dealer scrapped my old car. However, he didnt fill in the reg. document and I got fined £80 by the DVLA cos I didnt renew my road tax or declare it off the road, even though the car was scrapped by the dealer. |

Yes you will get fined if you do not declare your car off road, so complete a SORN and try get a refund on the remaining time you have on your tax disc?

If you are scrapping the car yourself then the scrap yard should give you an end-of-life notice which is evidence that you have scrapped it and they inform dvla, however if you sell it to a breakers yard you must inform dvla that you have sold the vehicle and to whom and when, otherwise you are still liable for and tax due or any other fines which may occur after it's left your care, it's a bit complicated and puts the car owner in full risk but that's how it is now. |

So long as you don't drive it to the scrap yard - then no ! Most scrap yards would collect - OR you could tow it behind another vehicle. |

If your car has no tax or mot do not drive or tow behind another vehicle, if the car is on the highway it must be taxed, insured and have a current mot. Get the scrapyard to collect it. There would be no point scrapping the car if it was mot`d and taxed, unless it was badly damaged, then the insurance would deal with it. You must declare it SORN or statutory off road notice, look at the back of your V5 (log book) there will be a section to fill in, or go to DVLA website.
