The proper thing to do is to title the car in your friend's name and list yourself as the lien holder on the title. That way she is the owner of the vehicle and she is responsible for the insurance. (you should require her to show you proof of insurance)
As lien holder you are not responsible for insurance on the car, but you do have legal right to the vehicle if she defaults on the loan. |

Sounds like a mess.
Realize that the registered owner must provide insurance and, in most states, is LIABLE for anybody else driving it and damages they cause.
So lets say your friend gets drunk and kills a family of four.
You could be sued. |

I'm in a similar situation. It would be best if she pays for the insurance; if the car is totally paid for....the monthly or 6 month payment will not be as much. She should assume the liabilities of driving it (would show her appreciation). Hope this helps! |

Call your insurance agent and let them figure it out. The things is will the car be in the friend's name or your name(s). You might have to have it in your name(s) to in order for you to obtain coverage on the car. But, why can't the friend get insurance and make it simple, however, you can purchase insurance if you retain title to the car until the friend pay it of, which is best ins case friend has an accident and trouble comes calling. |

Put the family friend as the registered owner, "we" as the legal owner. Then tags and insurance will be "family friend" responsibility. |
