Well... Pretty much anything involving banks, money laundering or insurance fraud.
Also I believe in certain instances, you can be tried federally for killing a police officer or other sworn government official. Hate crimes too.
Mail fraud or tampering is a federal crime. All crimes committed on federal property are federal crimes. Like the post office is federal property.
Guns in airports.
The difference between a federal and state crime is that state crimes are determined by individual states. So in California a home burglary carries a sentence of 10+ years in state prison, whereas in Nebraska it might be much much less. This is because there's no one moral statute on crimes like that. Each state's laws have different punishments.
Federal crimes are crimes where the law is the same across the whole country and you will be prosecuted in federal court and sent to federal prison. Usually things involving the government, government agencies, huge sums of money, or international drug smuggling/human trafficking. |
