No it's not country I totally agree. When you get into a car to drive it whether you be under the influence of Drink, Drugs or even lack of sleep you may as well be walking the streets with a loaded gun and shooting anyone who comes your way. If you want to endanger your own life...then fine go ahead and do it.....but don't put every other road user or pedestrian under the same death wish. My 22 year old son lost his licence 2 months ago due to drink driving (although just over the limit) GOOD I'm glad he did. He didn't kill anyone or cause an accident but was pulled up randomly. I guess he thought all my nagging was because I liked the sound of my own voice. He has had one short sharp shock as a Self Employed Painter and Decorator as he now has to pay a mate to drive him around. But at least I can sleep safe at night now knowing he's not putting himself or others in danger.
Please don't go blaming Judges though for short sentences they hand out....as someone who works in a Crown Court their hands are tied...sentencing guide lines are determined by the Government. Don't you think most Judges would like to give more than allowed whatever Crime it is.
Edit....And please all my contacts etc don't judge me by what my son did !! |

No. The sentencing laws in this country are a disgrace. |

Oh Country that is absolutely terrible. The law is an absolute *** and it is about time that steps were taken to make sure suitable punishment was given to those who take a life through reckless/dangerous driving while under the influence or not having both hands on the steering wheel. There is really no suitable punishment for taking a life and giving those who have to cope with their loss a life sentence. |

NO, no way is it long enough.
No sleep, well you can almost understand that, but for me drink and drugs are a no go.
I had the misfortune of holding someones head in my arms whilst they died, why did they die?
Because they got in a car and drove whilst drunk! |

no, I don't think 4 years is a long enough sentence, drink/drugs driving should never be tolerated. |

No
Should be a longer ban for a start
and 4 years for what amounts to Murder appears a little light!! |

That sentence is definitely not enough of a punishment in my opinion.
However, this is down to the Courts who make the sentencing decisions.
If penalties in this country were more harsh then we would probably have less crime in the long run but the problem we have now is people are too scared of upsetting criminals and breaching their rights.
The victims seem to come second now. |

It should be at least four times that you suggest. |

No one can properly assess what sentence would be appropriate, given so little information. |

it seems scandalously lenient. however, they will hopefully also have a lifetime of regret. but, somehow i feel i couldn't bet on it. |

Nope, it should be murder x 3, English law is a joke Country, and to be honest Scottish law isn't much better, the British penal system should start handing down sentences like the ones dished out in America, there the sentence would be 3 x 25yrs! |
|

Well, said Alberto
|
Should be ten years, that way they would serve at least five. |

NO. It's quite simple. There is no excuse. I would expect no leniency if I was stupid enough to drive under the influence of any one of the above. Anyone, whatever their 'excuse', should expect to serve time. |

Not even close...sounds like a slap on the wrist. I thought the US was the only country with slack DUI laws. To me, it's murder no matter how you look at it. A car is a weapon when in the hands of someone who has alcohol, plus drugs in their system. Here in the US you can get as many DUI's as you want pretty much, I've heard of people having 15. When will the authorities wake up?? Just recently near Cleveland a lady (drunk) was going the wrong way on one of the Interstate highways, she hit a man & his wife who were riding a motorcycle killing both of them. She also had several priors. Suprisingly this time she was sent to prison....only not long enough to match the crime. It's like giving these people a weapon & letting them go around killing innocent people. Will they ever learn ?? |

It would appear to be very lenient, but perhaps there is a reason for this which you dont give |
