A Gun or Dogs for security?
Find answers to your legal question.

A Gun or Dogs for security?

My brother is politically active and has had violence incited against. He wants to get a gun for self-defense in his home. He claims to know about firearm safety and will keep the gun under his mattress (go figure). There are no children in the home.

What is more effective for protection, dogs or guns? Informed opinions only please. References would be greatly appreciated!

First of all how is putting the gun under the mattress going to help the situation if he gets broke into while asleep? Makes no sense what so ever. And actually I don't see how a gun would help if the criminal broke in and made it all the way to the bedroom. The criminal's eyes are already adjusted to the dark, your brother would have to wake up and adjust. The dog would at least hopefully bark and alarm him, then and there he could reach under his mattress get the gun and pray the criminal hasn't befriended the dog and progressed further into the house. I know some dogs don't bark at all if someone comes in, mine seem to bark if someone farts though, barking at anything. A laso I used to have would only bark if the person were a total stranger never having been to my place before. She seemed keen to the people. If it were an insurance salesman she would bark, if it were a Mormon or Jehovah Witness, she didn't.

And so far as him being educated on firearm safety, one of our firearm instructors at the justice academy accidentally killed himself with his own firearm. Get me?

Buy an alarm system, set it, use it. That is the best bet. Most are only twenty nine dollars a month. And they are loud and they do work.

For goodess sake tell him not to leave it under your mattress. Get a decent gun safe like a GunVault. Also tell him to take an NRA basic pistol training class it might save your life.

While I can't offer any reference, I can offer a situation. What happens when you need his help in the middle of the night, and he's having a bad dream, he wakes up with you in his home, is startled, and his gun is right beside him?

Anon
Dogs are better, you dont have to worry about them missing the target LOL.

i would recommend both.
get the dog to provide a deterrent, and hopefully some early earning. also a pump shotgun will allow him to do more than hope the police get there in time to help him.

I'm voting for the gun but not where he wants to keep it note I'm a retired police officer.

A gun, a TRAINED dog, and an alarm system. But it probably makes the most sense to do whatever makes your brother the most comfortable and safe.

You can always throw a steak in a yard to defeat a dog. If your trained I would go with a shotgun

Your brother needs neither of these.

"Violentce Incited" is all he needs!!! Really, he sounds dangerious all by himself and doesn't need a yapping <small> dog, or a big lazy dog ... If he puts his gun under his pillow, he's a fool. Blah-Blah-Blah-Blah- Bllllaaaaahh.

Dogs, we have 4 and no one will get past them to us!! And dogs know when you are being threatened, you don't have to worry about accidently killing someone because you percieved them as a threat.

Guns should be kept in a gun safe period.
Take a gun safety course
Join the NRA
go to the range and practice frequently, then practice some more.
for home safety revolvers are much more reliable than semi autos and a pump shotgun is one helluva good deterrent to crime

Learn the laws of your local municipality
Don't tell others you have a gun or where it is, generally the ones who break into your home are the people who knows what's in it.

Keep your purchase receipts safe and NEVER let someone borrow a gun.
Did I mention Joining the NRA and going to the range frequently?

Make a "safe room" for your family with a good "solid" door and heavy locks Window bars are dangerous and illegal in places so it should have smaller windows, make sure the phone in this room is not cordless, I hate to say this but a cell phone is better.
teach family members gun safety and take them to the range also. what if you are not home or something befalls you?

Did I mention joining the NRA and frequenting the range and gun safety courses.

Mr. PhD
I would get the dog - a well trained animal can keep you from getting shot by your own gun. Dogs are also inherently intimidating. Dogs are legal everywhere.

Guard dogs are much better. A thief might try to get in the house knowing the owner has a gun thinking they could take stuff while the person was asleep, but they will no attempt to rob the place while a huge dog is barking at them.

normy in garden city
Most dogs make noise when they hear anything out of the ordinary. That gives the owner time to react and call the police if need be. Put "Beware of the dog" signs on the entry doors and on the fence/gate.

Dogs with guns? All joking aside. A well trained Dog would do well, but a hand gun is also a goo precaution. I have both, and for the same reason.

Gwen
Dogs are more of a deterrant than a gun because the potential thief can hear the dog bark and will likely pick a different house. Guns aren't a deterrant until the person is in the house but if you pull a gun you must be prepared to use it or it won't do you any good and if the person can get the gun away from you it can be used against you. But, I believe that U.S. citizens have the constitutional right to bear arms, including hand-guns. So, if your brother wants to get a gun, he should do so as long as he is responsible with his gun. But he should get a dog too.

i say get them both. the dog will come in handy it you have a bad shot.

♥Me against the world♥
sorry this is so short, but, Dogs

Totenkopft
I have both. I find that one compliments the other. Dogs actually serve as an early warning device. The gun will do the "dirty work".

Mr. Grudge
Anyone who claims to know about gun safety will know that keeping a gun under ones pillow is a very dumb thing to do. There are many reasons why a gun could be used for home defense, such as living in a rural area where it takes forever for the police to arrive, and there a dozens of reasons, legal and otherwise for people not to keep guns for home defense. I suggest that your brother take an NRA course in gun safety, talk to a LAWYER about the ramifications of using deadly physical force, and not to keep his gun under the bed. Mostly, I wish he'd simply get a dog and escape his house if someone was actually trying to get in. The only thing he should keep near his bed is a phone to call the police. Too many people are shot with their own firearms by burglars who surprised them and disarmed the homeowner. You really have to know what you're doing with guns to defend yourself with them.

Get Both. Dogs can be neutralized. He might also consider an alarm system.
