I agree with you that convicted pedophiles should receive an automatic death sentence. How often do we hear about some poor kid who is raped, murdered, dismembered by a KNOWN pedophile?!?!
I don't know what is wrong with the way they are wired that they can't control their urges ~ but the fact that they can't shows that they have NO place in any society.
EDIT: Crazy Girl is right ~ inmates live a much better life than many law abiding citizens, all on our tax dollars. They don't deserve it. |

A few years I would have said no to all your suggestions.
Now I think you may be right. |

number 9 is the best one , send back immigrants that break our laws, if they choose to live here then they can at least have the decency to abide by our laws. i know as well that alot of so called born and bred british break the law as well but as they were born here then i suppose we have to deal with them. number 6 as well sounds good . |

However the problems are tackled one thing is for sure the way forward has to change.
I think prisoners that have committed none violent crimes should be made to go to work to support their families and pay for their own keep when they are locked up in the evenings (or what ever shift they are on). If they do night work it leaves a bed available.
I also agree with you that prisons should be more of a punishment without the luxuries.
Asbo kids should be sent to boot camps for at least a year away from their families who have lost control over them, or we are not going to break this cycle of knives and guns amongst our youths. |

There are many people in prison who should be in a psychiatric hospital, unfortunately with the government cutbacks most psychiatric units have been closed down and there is no where else to put these people.
Many prisoners are on remand so perhaps they are not guilty.
Agree wholeheartedly that non nationals should be deported.
Remember the Carl Bridgewater case and the Birmingham bombers who were innocent, I think the death penalty should never be brought back.
The best way to solve prison overcrowding is to get rid of the very well paid Idiots who make our idiotic laws. |

BAD IDEAS - except 4, 5 and 9.
Prison doesn't do anyone any good.
It usually makes them worse than when they went in.
Death sentences just bring us down to the level of the killers.
Two wrongs don't ever make a right. |

Our prisons are crowded for interesting reasons. First, we lock up non violent drug offenders for long terms. Second, about 30 years ago, most states began closing large facilities that cared for people suffering from severe mental illness. The idea is that the facilities were be replaced by smaller community based facilities. Unfortunately that did not happen. Our prisons now house an enormous number of people who have needed mental health care and did not get it. For many, the first time they came in contact with any system that could help was when they were arrested.
Over 16% of prison inmates suffer from severe mental illness.
70% of the inmates with mental illness are in for non violent crimes.
Life without parole (no picnic) is now available in 48 states. It means what it says. It costs much less than the death penalty.
Last of all, more than 50 of the 124 wrongfully convicted people on death row had already served a decade before being exonerated. Speeding up the process will guarantee we execute innocent people. |

I cannot argue against your comments, but may I suggest
sending perpetual criminals to Turkish jails, I have been informed their treatment of prisoners is worse than yours,
and not many re-offend. |

All of the above are standard in the Isle of Man .
No hold on ... they never had TV's DVD's or computers , and hard labours a no go with 24 hour lock up being the norm .
The longest solitary confinement in The Isle of Man Victoria Road Prison that i know of is about 6 months . |

How about stop throwing people in prison for minor offenses like possession of marijuana, or being drunk in public? what a waste of space that could be used for the more serious criminals. |

you forgot one, hangings on the court house square. they are treated better in jail and live better than most of us that go to work everyday. they are in there because they break the law. just cant agree with carrying a gun though. i carry one and i am not out there shooting people. i am the one that gets called when some cracked up person shoots someone.that is why Phoenix crime rate has dropped. go Joe.. a Texan |

Surly no objection to methadone being freely available? Just to maintain your habit.
How about 1 nurse to every 15 prisoners.
Or maybe being paid for being released 18 days early!
Welcome to the modern prison service |

While your thoughts sound Jim Dandy, they are unrealistic. You have to remember that inmates are people too. Perhaps, more private prisons should open in order to house ALL the criminals that deserve to be there.
Now, I think that a nice long life in prison, complete with other inmate harassment is very appropriate for very bad people.
Unfortunately inmates are entitled to fair treatment by the state. I agree whole heartedly with the 'chain gang' thought, kinda like workforce only worse! Ah well there isn't much any of us can do about it, but I like the way you thought about these 'options'. |

The rantings of a sensible man! I couldn't agree more. Law and Order is being flouted everywhere you go. No only are louts and drunks to blame but Police Officers riding bikes on pedestrian footways, ignoring offences while parking their police cars on pavements to get cigs from the shops .... the list is endless. |
