AA Sponsor..can my friend drop the one she has?

My friend got a DUI. She has been in AA for about 6 months now and has a sponsor. She is required, by the court, to attend daily meetings. Lately my friend has been so depressed because of all that she has to do (rather than do jail time). She is very upset because her Sponsor is very pushy and judging of her. I met her once, didn't even know she was the sponsor and took an instant dislike to her mamerisms. I told my friend that this is her life, she is doing really great and she doesn't need to be brought down by this woman.
My question is: Can't she ask for another sponsor....someone that she feels good about talking with every day??? She can do it in a nice way, but I feel she has the right to her own choice of who her sponsor is????

She sure can and you should let her know right away. The whole point of AA is to have guidance and to have support. Your not there to be told what to do, but to help you understand.

absolutely. The main idea is for her to maintain her sobriety. If her current sponsor is standing in her way, she should get a new one after having the courtesy to thank the other one for her help up to that pt. She should be careful about people imposing their sobriety rules now & saying she is wrong to do that. Tell her to trust her gut. Depressed people probably won't stay sober long. She needs an affirming sponsor. |

Yes she should choose a sponsor that she feels comfortable with. No one can choose a sponsor for you. It is something you do on your own. |

People change sponsors all the time. That being said, a sponsor, especially a first sponsor, SHOULD BE pushy and judgmental. That is part of their role in convincing someone to deal with all their problems instead of trying to hide from them. A sponsor is not a friend, and should not try to be one. |
