Alcohol abuse causes domestic violence?
Find answers to your legal question.

Alcohol abuse causes domestic violence?

Does alcohol abuse cause domestic violence or is it just up to the person?
Additional Details
But why would the alcohol cause the violence. Is it bc a person gains more strenth when under influence. Do you think they would do it if they were sober?

Alcohol is a contributing factor, or as abusers call it, an "excuse", but it does not cause violence.

People cause violence. Alcohol may release inhibitions, and make it easier for an abuser to justify his actions, but alcohol will not make a non-violent person abusive.

The "trigger" could be several things, and studies show an abused person is more likely to be an abuser. Most abusers just have a need to be in control.

no, people make their own choice, drunk or not

i dont accept the "he was drunk" excuse

i know plenty of people that drink and dont beat on their significant other (this goes for chicks, too)

It can certainly make bad things worse.....and does many times.

Not all the time but yes it makes some people violent.

It's up to the person who is the abuser. Abusing someone is a control over them and it is addictive. Alcohol doesn't help it, but it is NOT the cause of it either.

For the most part, it's up to the person, but certainly, alcohol can be a contributor.

One of the things that alcohol does is to disable your inhibitors. When you're not getting the message from your brain that says, "hmm, bad idea", you're at risk of doing things that you wouldn't do while you were sober. Sometimes, inhibitions can be a good thing!

Edit:
It's hard to define exactly what it is that "causes" domestic violence. One of the clear contributors is growing up in a home where domestic violence is common, and being taught that it's how people act. It's not genetic...this has been proven by those who have had abusive parents, but who take the time to learn that it's not normal behavior. Most of it, regardless of genes or upbringing, is simply a lack of ability to control ones self. It might be because the abuser simply doesn't care to try...it might be because they have a chemical imbalance. Every case has its own root cause, including these and probably a hundred other reasons.

Hitting, kicking, biting, slapping, pushing, head butting or ANY touching with the intent to injure (some verbal threats too, if easily carried out); are the cause of domestic violence.

Alcohol reduces the inhibitions that keep otherwise clear thinking people from acting on their impulse.

That impulse; uncontrolled anger. It doesn't even take an alcohol abuser, just being drunk reduces judgment, inhibitions and fear of consequences.

Add that to the average stresses some families face, you have domestic violence.

DV happens without alcohol all the time, but there are usually more reported alcohol related DV cases than not.

A lot of drunks are happy, sleepy drunks. So the alcohol there is not the cause of violence. It's the reason a fat guy or huge chick strips on the bar while singing Long Neck Bottle.

So my vote goes to no, alcohol doesn't cause it. It may help it along but it is not the cause.

it can add to the domestic violence. but domestic violence is there before alcohol is even involved most of the time. it usually starts out small and gets bigger and bigger as it goes on.

Well, it is believed that alcohol actually makes a person's judgment "fuzzy", thus making them more likely to react irrationally in a situation. Individuals that are more prone to violence are people that may commit the offense if drunk.

It also depends upon the person. Some people, when drunk, are rather mean and violent, while others are happy and affectionate. It depends upon the person that is drinking.

I think that in most cases, domestic violence is going to happen whether the person is drunk or not - but the alcohol is a way for the abuser to "excuse it away", so to speak. They can blame it on the alcohol, instead of admitting that they are sick individuals needing counseling.

Some can handle it and some can't..
I don't know what makes some tolerate it and others not..
Maybe genetics?

MarkO
It makes it more likely .

Over the years I have watch many relationships fail and it was because of alcohol abuse. One of those relationships was my own. He was a good guy but when he started drinking he turn into another person, almost delusional.

Domestic violence is not caused by alcohol abuse but it aggravates it. A person with a dominant personality is more likely to commit domestic violence whether alcohol or non alcohol drinker, although not all people with this kind of personality does domestic violence.

yes in most cases because i have a friend that all of my other friends have to watch how much he drinks because he gets voilent

2-3 ok

more is bad ,people get more emotional at what others say

it can cause it yes.
but people tend to blame alcohol instead of themselves when an attack happenes.

in the end really, no matter how much alcohol one has, you can always stop yourself from hitting another person.
