I personally never drink,I like to keep my witts about me. But do you know how many surgeons have shown up for work and did surgery while they were drunk! So how are you going to single out cops for drinking and not the rest of the world? |

Go Wanda! Glad to see you got that in there.
How about bus drivers that can never drink, or politicians, or baby sitters, or auto workers?
You get hammered and dumb **** will happen, I don't care what you do.
Damn, the haters are on here tonight. |

Alcohol seems to be a factor in many bad decisions be it in public service or not. Abuse of authority should be dealt with no matter what the influencing factors may be. This willful misconduct should be reason enough to remove such person from society and institute a policy of educating the public servants of their responsibilities on or off duty. |

I have never beat a person for no reason (drunk or sober).
Your logic is awful.
If someone breaks the law or violates policy then they will be dealt with.
Edit: Uhhhhhhhhh. I never said (or any officer here) Police should be allowed to drink on the job. That would be moronic. No officer should drink on the job. The officer this poster is talking about was off duty. The basis of the question is should Police be allowed to drink (ever).
The laws of my state allow anyone twenty-one or old to drink alcohol. Most Police Officers are twenty-one or older (there are a few exceptions (permitted by my state) for people to be sworn it at twenty). Therefore, most officers can legally drink alcohol while off duty.
Airline pilots can drink alcohol off duty. They have policies that say how much time must elapse between drinking and flying. Police Departments have policies that state that no officer is to report for duty with the odor of alcohol on their breath. That is a very big no no in my profession. |

While I do feel bad for the poor woman who went through that and hope that she has/will receive some sort of compensation for it ... I think it's absolutely ridiculous to even propose that officers not be allowed to drink when off the clock. You wouldn't like it if you were told you couldn't do certain things when off the clock. |

Police officers are only human and should be entitled to have a drink just like anyone else when they are off duty. |

you can't bar the police from drinking while off duty.
Anyone can lose it on drink and do some nasty things, we can't tar them all with the same brush. |

It is rare that the police serve us anyway, but creating more rules for the hours when people are not working only leads us all into a more controlled environment. Do you want to be told not to drink when you are not working?? |

Police are human too. Do you want to barred from doing something just because the type of job you do. People make mistakes and alcohol adds to that, but I'm in no way supporting what he did. |

At times I wouldn't mind if some of them reached a blood alcohol level of say 0.50%.
What I think would be a good idea is to pass a law, saying that anybody who bears a badge and takes a sip must continue drinking until reaching that level. Otherwise, if you want to drink with the rest, you must check not only your weapons, but your badges at the door, and become responsible for your actions just like any other citizen. |

Most police are evil even without alcohol, but I have been responsible for many losing their jobs for being drunk during interactions with innocent humans. |

I think the only people who would defend the police drinking are other police.
Alcohol is considered to be a vice.
There is no known physical need to consume it.
It is the pinnacle of bad judgment.
Police are not the only profession that should be forbidden to drink. Airline pilots are another.
The question is not about the individuals rights but the Job requirements.
As long as your job does not involve me or my safety, its fine if you want to drink.
Police carry guns and are trained to be aggressive.
That training does not go away when they are off duty. They still are mentally the same individuals off duty as on.
I think that anyone who needs alcohol does not have the mental stability to be a law enforcement officer. |

Heck, we'd be best served by officers who score high in their IQ test!
