Alcohol is the major contributor to the rise in anti-social behaviour, should off licences be closed?

Not just off licences but also shops and supermarkets.
It's the easy obtainability of alcohol which makes it such a problem

I wish people would read the question.
Nowhere did I advocate the banning of the sale of alcohol, just reducing the easy availability of it.

That was tried... it was called Prohibition and it actually cause MORE alcohol abuse and crime problems.

Look at drugs today..... illegal, but easy to obtain and abuse.

Bottom line.... if people want booze or drugs or anything else, they will use and maybe abuse it.

Absolutely not.

This country is getting more and more totalitarian by the minute.

People will always be antisocial. If they want to drink, they'll drink - it doesn't matter where they get it from. Hence the fact that people still stagger around on cocaine.

It's people we need to deal with. Upbringings, educations and influences.

Instead of laying the blame on easier targets - shops who, on the whole, do business with social, moral, law-abiding customers.

Arthur B how very nieve you are. First you harp on about the Mcanns again and now you blame all of lifes woes on the places where alcohol can be purchased or consumed.

I don't think you need to ban off licences or supermarkets or pubs. What you need to look at is the people who are anti-social in their use of it. If you banned cigarettes and all tabacco products there would still be smokers. You can't claim that banning cannabis has reduced the drug problems some areas face. If you closed all bars, pubs and stopped the sale of alcohol it would not suddenly make the Church social a sell out event !

Sometimes you need to look into a problem just a little bit deeper than you are doing on this one.

It would be hard to prove a case that alcohol is THE major contributor to a RISE in antisocial behavior. Alcohol has been consumed for thousands of years.

And, it was much more easily obtained in the early 20th and 19th centuries. Dad used to be able to send his child with a nickel and an empty bucket, to have the local bar fill it up to take home.

The parents of these anti social kids should be banned from purchasing alcohol and made to control their offspring.

The moral police have no business making decisions for the rest of us. We tried banning alcohol here in the USA in the 1920s. Prohibition was a mistake. It led to murderous gangsters, like Al Capone, being able to rise to positions of power. Violent crime rates went through the roof. The same thing is happening now with the "War on Drugs."
Outlaw alcohol, and I'll just make it myself at home, or I'll buy it on the black market, which will create a similar situation as that which occurred here in the 1920s. Violent crime rates will skyrocket, and many innocent victims will pay the price... just because a minority of the population decides to force its will on the majority.

We need to go back to not permitting alcohol sales after 11pm, and punish severely off-licences who serve to under 18s, either directly or indirectly. And we need to make sure drunks under 18 are put in court.

No its not look at prohibition in the 1930's in America crime went up.

The major contributor to anti-social behaviour is the parents of the children who can't or won't control them and let the kids wander the streets late at night without any control over them.

Alcohol will always be easily available whether you like it or not. If you try to reduce the sales of it, or try to tax it into obscurity, people will just start making the stuff at home. Remember, all you need to make alcohol is water, yeast, and anything with sugar in it - in other words, ingredients you can find in any supermarket or grocery store that are normally used in most foods. What's the government going to do then - ban fruit and baking ingredients?

Dont we live in a materialistic world You arnt socially accepted if you dont know the words 4x4,or our new conservatory was installed by.Remember when you needed credentials to get HP,not how many credit cards you own. This period in time was when parents where parents, and one stayed at home to create stability.Note one stayed not which one Of course their wasnt things like who wants counciling because of and ring me for,but it worked Someone said and rightly so that police are there to prevent crime, not running after the crime.I am the first to admit that things as they are, that reporting a crime would not be a thing i would consider as i dont believe i would get anonimity. The phone would be traced, and i would end up grilled to toast. If a trace didnt then millions of cameras would Maybe if the young were to see the Police officers tested for alcohol and drugs daily and say a checkable log kept, they have a goal to aim for Just a thought. stay lucky

I was in Tesco the other day with my 16 year old daughter, and she was asking why she could not buy a lottery ticket ( we live in Ireland, they can't buy them til 18, we then made a joke about in a couple of years she will be able to buy me a drink - the tesco lady said that they are raising the alcohol level to 21 in the next year, not sure bout if it's true, but it wouldn't be such a bad thing would it!

Must admit, my daughter was a bit peeved!

If you don't like alcohol I am pretty sure that you don't have to buy it or drink it.
