I still have 1 year to sort this out but I plan to become a homicide detective someday, and I've read I need to be in the police force for about 2 years or so then get promoted, am I right? Also, I need a degree of some sort. Mine will be Criminology. But I'm not sure If I should go to college before OR after the police academy! haha any info/help will be greatly appreciated :)

Yes, you do need to be a police officer before becoming a detective and a college degree would be helpful and may be necessary just to become a police officer so you are probably better off going to college first. Alternatively, if you do find a police department that will hire you without a degree, you can go to night classes while working as a police officer so you can pay your tuition while you are working. |

It varies with department to department for how long you need to "work the road" until you are eligible for investigations. It usually consists of an Application process within the department. I would find a department that you like working for, in an area that you like and then put your time in with various different types of department opportunities (FTO, CIT, ECT) and then work your way to investigations. I am skeptical that an officer of two years will be accepted to investigations with the homicide division. Usually they like to see a substantial amount of time handling calls on a Officer/street level before you will be put into a situation where you will investigate felony crimes. Go for the degree whenever you are able to get it, as it will just benefit you in the long run! Good luck. |
