Anyone know law on going through red light.?

A few weeks ago friends were visiting from, were visiting from Holland. I have been sharing a few peoples cars.,when there not getting used. The owner of one of the cars asked me if i had been caught on camera going through a red light. I'm sure i haven't and i know friends from holland had been using the car, but he hasn't had chance to ask them yet. Does anyone know the law on this.

'Running' a red traffic light is an offence under The Road Traffic Act. However, the registered keeper of the car will get a form from the Police asking for the identity of the driver. This is where the grey area comes in. If you were driving the car when the offence occurred, the keeper would be responsible for filling your details in and a Notice of Intended Prosecution will be sent to you. Proving that you were the driver, if your friend says he does not know who was the driver will keep the offence on file, just in case there is any chance of 'picking you up' on another traffic offence. Good luck

Here in Ontario it doesn't matter who is driving the car, it is the registered owner that gets the ticket.

Technically the owner of the car is assumed guilty since they choose who to loan their car to. If you loaned the car I would say it is your responsibility to pay the ticket and collect from the person you loaned it to if possible. If not possible then you just learned a valuable lesson and an expensive one. It would only be right to cover it.

If your car got caught on camera the owner of the car gets the ticket..My sister in law did the same thing with my car..

if your car is on camera then you get the ticket.
So...I suggest you don't let your friend drive your car.

The owner of the vehicle is going to have to prove that he wasn't driving and must then be able to tell the police who was. If he can't answer either question to their satisfaction, he is the one who will take the fall.

the law covering this varies according to which country you are in....thats why answers on this forum vary wildly - you need to edit this question specifying which country you are in to get any sensible answers

YOU CAN SAY YOUR FRIEND WAS DRIVING AND THEY WILL GET IN TOUCH WITH THEM

The registered owner of the car is always responsible. Thats why you don't let ANYONE drive your car, anywhere. The owner got what they deserved and you all had better be glad I was not in the middle of that intersection when your friends decided to run the red light.

The vehicle gets the summons, not the person driving. No points on the owners license in camera cases.

The owner of the car wil get the ticket as he is the registered keeper. If the car was taken without consent, the owner still gets the ticket.... A decnt friend on finding out would pay the charge for him and accept the responsibility of the offence.
Not what you want to hear? harsh but true

Depends. If there was a camera working with the light the reg no. of the car will be traced. If there was no camera there is no evidence. If there is a photo, you can be required to name the driver of the vehicle at the time of the offence, however if you genuinely cannot recall who was driving you may have an out.

SURE! DONT DO IT.

This is going to depend on your location. People can answer like they know the law, but they're not helping you because they don't even know where you're from.

Around here, traffic cameras are set up in such a way that they're supposed to catch the face of the driver in the photo.

If you weren't driving the car, you couldn't have committed a moving violation. You may get a ticket, anyway. If you were willing to fight it all the way to the end, I'd have to assume you'd eventually be absolved as the burden is on the government to prove you did something wrong. Owning a car that went through a red light is not a crime.
