Are more crimes solved than unsolved?

Certainly from my own experiences as a UK cop (12 yrs) then more crimes are unsolved than solved. Unfortunately I cannot give you a figure, but my own crime list is about 40% detected against 60% undetected.

As others have quite rightly pointed out many people will not even report crimes for a variety of reasons; i.e. cant be bothered, no faith in the police, afraid of repurcutions, etc

it depend on the determination of the detectives doing the works but they still needs our helps since we do not have CCTV all over the places

Unsolved I'm afraid, and even more that do not get reported, or detected by the victim.

nope...cause if you wanna get technical theres alot of crimes that dont even get reported....so they dont even get the chance

Unsolved I'm afraid and most of those that are solved are solved by the hard work and commitment of the person/persons who have been offended against unfortunately.

In my agency more reported crimes are solved than unsolved but like others have suggested there are many crimes that go unreported. It's not unusual to solve a break in and find stolen property from another break in that wasn't reported. Often we'll have a confession to go with with an unreported crime.

Unsolved I am afraid. Not enough Officers to deal with the work load, the government wants to get it's priorities right i.e. more Police Officers to deal with these unsolved crimes.

Depends if the Police are wanting more money or not.
A burglary can also be criminal damage, breaking into lock fast premises, theft, 4 crimes.
or Burglary 1 crime, or agrivated burglary a more serious crime.
This applies to most crimes. A driving charge can be made into many charges.
On the whole I think the majority of crimes are solved.

Interesting question. I don't know the answer but I'll give a little perspective.

I read a lengthy article a few years back about murder investigations in NYC. You'd figure that the police would put more effort into solving murders than any other crime, right?

Well, they found a suspect in 80% of murder cases, got indictments on 80% of those and convictions on 80% of those. That comes to about 50% conviction rate on murders. That means that half of the people who commit murder there, get away with it!

Other violent crimes probably have a lower rate of solving since less effort is probably put into it by police and prosecutors.

I have to imagine that for property crimes, the rate is much, much lower. I've had my car broken into and radio stolen in NYC and was told by the police, "You have insurance, don't you?" as a tacit admission that they weren't going to do anything about it.

I also know that in 4 other property crimes I've had committed against me, nothing was ever done by the police.

So, I'd have to say that counting property crimes, the number of crimes not solved is WAAAY higher than the number solved.

Voice of Liberty
Uniform Crime Report (UCR) data shows that only 20% of offenses are cleared by arrest. This means that of all reported crimes, police make an arrest for only about 20 in every 100.

Actually, you have to realize just how much smaller this statistic really is when you take into account that about 52% of violent crime and 62% of property crime is NEVER rreported according to the National Crime Victimization Survey, 2003.

Also, remember that many offenders who are arrested in these crimes never serve time. I don't have the statistics on this, but I believe that it is around 50% of the cases that are brought to court end with the accused being released because of mistrial, non-guilty verdict, etc.

given the fact that they only go after the crimes against the rich these days it's safe to assume that there are way more unsolved
