Statistics: Interesting figures but where do they come from and how accurate are they?
In the city where I work, the violent crime rate is up. However, that not because there are more actual incidents of violence, it's because everything is recorded correctly, hence the appearance of a rise in crime. Crime statistics are only a guide.
CCTV: Only any good if it's in the right area, pointing in the right direction and not obscured by trees or vandalised by the very people it's trying to watch. And try identifying people from a camera that's half a mile away from the incident and of poor quality, in the dark, not easy, I've tried. Maybe if more people did their civic duty and actually helped the Police instead of saying 'I don't really want to get involved' then there would be less reliance on CCTV.
Stop Search: Go away and read the rules on section 1 of PACE, Section 23 Misuse of drugs act etc and then come back and make another comment. There must be grounds for a search and if they are not there, it's an unlawful search and anything found would be inadmissible as evidence.
The government: They make the rules, the Police try, (with limited resources and funding and little or no respect or help from the people they are trying to protect), to uphold them.
Don't blame the Police when you clearly don't know how difficult the job is and how these things work. |

it is getting crazy. Britain needs double the police numbers, they need better equipment and better pay. |

the police have to give this sought of advice to make their job easier and to mask the fact that they are a revenue raising agency of the government.
If no one displayed that they had muggable items the police could claim the resulting drop in crime was as a result of their activities whilst all along they themselves were out mugging the motorist who had crept a few miles over the speed limit. |

the problem in the UK is that we what to feel safe but don't what to feel that we are being watch our our privacy invaded.
yes we have CCTV but all a yob would do is go to a place he knows there is no CCTV and mug someone there.
giving advice on not using high value goods in public is just common sense, as most crime is opportunist crime. IE if a crock is waking along a street and see you using your laptop on a bench with no-one around he is going to have it.
yes in an ideal world we would be able to go where we want when we want and do what we want without the fear of crime. |

Well, don't call yourself lucky just yet. Wait to see what 's going on in America.
But police is doing it's best to protect (and so much for serving) |

Because of the human rights brigade and the civil liberties idiots we're no longer allowed to do random stop/searches. We're not allowed to take people off the streets and remand them to protect the public, they have to be released on bail only to reoffend.
I can't wait until the system goes full circle and criminals are once again treated like the scum they are. |

Statistically people are more likely to die in a traffic accident than almost any other way. The only really reliable way to stop this is to write more tickets. When cops do this, we get hammered as being "revenue raisers" when it is actually the only way to get people to stop dangerous driving practices.
Oh well, it's more fun to blame cops than it is to take the parents to task that don't watch their kids, etc.
Go for the easy target it's more fun and socially acceptable.
Cops and the military are used to your abuse anyway, hate us until you need us is always going to be our motto. |

Of course the Police are doing their job, the problem is
that there are a lot of criminals out there and looking
after yourself is a big part of not becoming a victim of
crime, some self defence classes keeping to lit roads
not carrying your cellphone and i-pod could stop you
from being attacked so what is wrong with that, the
Police have a myriad of more serious cases to deal
with.....Sometimes it is up to you to be a little more
vigilant................................. |

Its not the polices fault , yet again Tony Blair has a lot to answer for ,lack of police on the streets, not enough bobbies on the beat cuts cuts cuts ! When the police do actually catch anyone doing any wrong it goes to court and the judges just give em a slap on the wrists and off they go knowing full well that they can commit crimes and not get any real punishment for it ... where are they gonna put these criminals in already overcrowded prison system ? I mean they are letting paedophiles get off scott free !!
I actually feel for the police and i am not sure how they hell they manage to recruit anyone in this day and age !! |

No, the police are not getting ridiculous. They ARE ridiculous, power mad, moronic with a tendency to psychotic acts, brutal and without the ability to use reason and integrity. Concentrating on MOTORISTS, they can now stop, fine and give you penalty points for using a mobile phone, remember the case where they used a police helicopter which cost thousands of pounds to track and convict a woman driver for eating an apple whilst driving, how bloody ridiculous is that. Like this government they are out of control and a joke at the expense of us the British tax-paying public, that is unless you are of an ethnic origin, then they let you go because it cost to much to process and interpret! |

Here in America we do have a stop and search it is called a "Terry" from the case Ohio v. Terry. Where they can under reasonable suspision and for officer saftey stop someone and "pat them down". They can not search them. If when they are patting them down for weapons they feel something that could be a gun or something then they can ask the person what it is and then remove it. If it could be dangerous. But, when driving around and you see a suspsious person you can get out and talk to them and then if they have further suspsion then they will do a Terry. But you can not just stop any random person and "search" them unless you have reasonable suspision. |

The police do what the government tell them so if you are going to have a go at anyone - make it the governement.
They do watch cctv but that doesnt prevent crime. People will still do these things even if they know they are being watched...
Unless we employed 1 police officer per every 1 person in GB there will never be harmony but would you be prepared to pay for your own personal guard! NO |

The police don't make the rules.
And if you don't want to get mugged it is best to follow basic crime prevention advice such as not walking around with you ipod and mobile phone advertised for robbing; this is also common sense.
There are CCTV cameras everywhere and you are caught on CCTV about 250 times a day; but cameras are machine and only work if they are pointed in the right direction; If a robbery is going on on corner b and the camera is pointed at camera a it won't help much. Also cameras are usually run by the local council and are not controlled by the police.
If you're so worried about crimes levels why don't you do something and sign up to be a special, a PCSO, volunteer to man the front of th station offices taking crime reports or even join the police. |

CCTV isn't everywhere and the people who generally commit this sort of crime are usually aware of where the CCTV cameras are.Police use CCTV ALL THE TIME (it drive you nuts sometimes trying to watch hours of CCTV). Even if you see an incident on CCTV it doesn't necessarily follow that you can find out who the person is.
The advice of not using IPODS etc in public in certain areas is a good one |

Yes, the police really need to get their priorities. In Bristol at the moment they have three coppers in a park (College Green if you know Bristol) 24/7 from February to April, handing out dispersal orders to people not causing any trouble. They are appealing to get this period extended. Were there any problems there in the first place? NO! How much is this causing the taxpayer? Lots.
To the person that thinks we should double police numbers, please tell me where the money is going to come from. NHS? Education? |

It's not the police that are doing there jobs , it's the courts . The trouble is that this country has got too soft on justice. The whole system needs a revamp according to what we want the public want , after all this is our country and it about time that the govenment were reminded as to why they are there. If they are unable to carry out the wishes of the people, just why do we have them there. |

the second part of your statement sums up what they want , let things get worse and then people start asking for there rights to be taken away (STOP AND SEARCH) thats not freedom yet we wont be able to walk into town soon enough with out showing millions of pieces of info about ourselves to bigbrother everyday! .
this is called problem ,reaction , solution , create the "problem" get the "reaction" from the people and then come along with the solution taking more and more rights away as we see this is the same technique with the FAKE war on terror , start off by finding out that 9/11 was an inside job and then it snowballs from there .
heres a simple quote by a unwatered down and unsimple man .
"people that choose to give away nesesary liberty for temporary security deserve neither liberty nor security. " Benjamin Franklin

The police in my local area always were...
...I remember about a year ago when we were on a night out in town and I can remember.. down the 'market pubs' there were two lads that got into a fight... and next thing you know, to sort it out: two police cars turned up (both with two coppers in it) and a riot van with about 3/4 coppers and a mobile video unit with two cops in too!! And all I felt like saying to them... why on earth do you need all this fuss! - it's two lads fighting... you would need maybe three police men to sort it out... and It got me so mad because if you think about it.. there could be an actual REAL crime going on at the other end of the town and they are bothering about two drunk men...
Know what I mean
Some good points you have too

More police and more protection, you need cameras that follow every single person everywhere they go at every moment of their lives.
I am so glad we had the balls to break free from that pathetic empire you now call the UK (unlike...well every nation that is part of it). But what could you really expect from a nation that still has a ******* Queen? If you fools had any guts you would hang every member of the royal family...but even with so called "freedom" you are still forced to worship and adore them..........quite amusing. What...do you owe them something?
Have fun in your police state you WORM.
How about you carry a gun....oh yeah...you stripped law abiding innocent people of that right. Criminals by nature are people who break the law...what kind of absurd logic could lead you to think that making more laws will reduce the number of criminals? The only possible outcome is to create more criminals and therefore create more victims! |

Yes I agree, it is stupid! The police focus there time in the wrong areas, hammering the motorist as it is easy money, while some more old lady gets mugged for £5.00! The whole system is the wrong way round, the police focus on bringing in the cash, even the court system is a joke, and unless you are an immigrant dont even bother asking for help! I hate this place, this whole country is a joke! |
