Are the police as good as they were say 30 yrs ago.?

Define "as good as".
Police today are over politicised and seem less able to use their own judgement.
They are swamped by rules and paperwork and not able to get out on the street enough.

Because of the amount of new laws and the target culture they err on the side of caution and arrest rather than warn.

They are also hampered by a judiciary which is likely to give the benefit of the doubt to the criminal and hence even though the police know the criminals they are released by an over cautious CPS/judiciary.

In my own opinion the cops 30 years ago are more better than the cops we have now a days. Yes they say cops now are better equipped with much muscle power and fire power but the cops then are more subtle and much wiser. Now cops rely on computers and the machine not much of their own ability.

Far, far to subjective to say. It's like comparing apples to oranges. The job is not the same any longer. 30 years ago, cops were cops and were there to enforce laws. Now were supposed to be social workers, family counselors, marriage counselors, clergy, etc..

i think that police are the same... unfortunately society has changed...

they cannot be forceful...they cannot use judgement.. everything is judged...and must be done by the book to prevent lawsuits etc.

this is the uk, where i assume you are from? i think we need to give them more powers like they had before.... where, they can be trained to judge a situation, and if need be use extensive force.

its not the poilce that arnt as good...its all they can do...

All in all I would say much better Their training, Equipment and crime solving tech has progressed light years from 30 years ago.

Depends what you mean by better. As in the past we still have a sizeable minority who are prepared to lie in court and innocent people are then sentenced. They are also incompetent as the recent execution on the tube testifies..

Years ago 1970is you would see the local bobby walking or local Area he would mix with the public and was a part of the community.
it seems now all the police want to do is ride round in cars they don't Communicate with the local people.
my son opened his first shop in our local area a few years ago. and was victim
of Armed robbery.
when the robber fled my son rang the local police station
the Police turned up THREE DAYS LATER.
yet on the same road a week later just up from my sons shop someone had a minor bump where two cars had a Knock and bugger me within 30Min's 2 police cars

So in my Area if you a victim of Armed robbery DONT call the police.
But if you have a minor bump in your car ull be fine.....
I will add what i mean by minor bump for them that think i mean a pile up.And a road full of dead bodies
A MINOR bump means two cars hit Each other and in doing so smash headlights And yes i Know if you have broken glass on the road you should call the police.
No one was hurt in the bump no blood no broken body parts
i was standing talking to the shop keeper that called the police about the bump
and he was shocked at how fast the police turned up.
And i will also add that non of the occupants was wanted by the police
so why 30mins for a bump yet three days to respond to a Armed robbery
i cant work it out
And have No Faith in the police. But i see they like to be on TV.
Maybe a good Question would be where does RAV get his Steroids from.....

I think they are better trained and in much better physical shape, but I also believe their "old powers" are reduced much much more now, mainly, because everyone is afraid of a lawsuit!

Better. Today we are better trained, better equipped, and better managed. Thanks to technology and improvements in the profession we are being used more effectively. I started Police work in 1991 and I think things are better now then 17 years ago.......let alone 30 years ago.
