Are there any reasons why a robber would break into the second floor window instead of a first floor?

woke up to a small sound at my window last night and thought i heard the screen to it slowly coming off, what do you know, i was right
someone jumped off a ladder and jumped into a mustang beside my house and sped off
just wondering...was it a prank by some crazy teen..or an intential break in? and why the second floor?

no i do not have a teenage daughter...the thing that scares me about the whole thing is this window they were pulling the cover thing off of has broken locks....

Second floor windows are less likely to be noticed as an entry point when homeowners/residents return. also less likely to be locked bedrooms where valuables (jewelry, money, collectibles) are more likely to be kept. allowing more time to look for them. These also tend to be smaller and easier to carry. In the event of a return residents enter on the ground giving burglars more warning and extra time too exit. If stolen goods are tossed will travel farther more often than not from upper floor. Burglar with free hands has more options.
