I think what most of these people are missing is one of the most notorious killers of all time Charles Manson never killed anyone. He simply convinced others to do the killing for him. Now given yes he was a Cult leader, and he had them commit a crime. ... So yes instructing someone to do a crime is the same as doing the crime yourself. You said they injured themselves and if they are of sound mind then No you cant be held accountable that make them morons.... But if they are mentally at issue or under age then yes you could be held accountable.

If you talk to them about committing a crime, and they do it, then there would possibly be a conspiracy case against you.

If they just did a stupid stunt, then there is no crime, although you could get sued.

If the person is a minor it might be serious. Other than that people are pretty much responsible for their own actions. If the person was an adult and did something dumb because someone on an IM told them to, I think it's safe to say this would not stand up in a court of law. If you impersonated a police officer or doctor that would be illegal but if you didn't break any laws here I don't think much could be done. Then again there are some really stupid lawsuits that go to court so it's hard to say.

If a threat was made or implied or if it is reasonable for society to expect that a threat was implied. If malice was the intent on your part or you were not prudent in control of any power you may have or the person you are IMing thinks you have. The fact that you are asking this question would imply to many that you have some kind of understanding in the control you do have. So, yes .. in one way or the other you can be found responsible for someone elses actions.

Yes you can be charged.

As children are venerable and you are telling them to commit a crime. You should be reporting any information that is not legal. You are not the parent.
