Also, do you ticket not coming to a complete stop at a four way stop with no other cars in sight? This is a stupid ticket IMO

LOL Lucy, that is totally true.

Who in their right might would give a ticket for going 1 mph over the speed limit. Give me a break.

First a visual estimation has to take place, then hit the radar. BAM- there's your ticket! lol I sounded like Emeril...hahha

Maj. Drew
Speeding is speeding. Be it 1 MPH over or 10 MPH over.

That being said. The burden of proof lies with the officer and most radar guns are +/- 5 MPH when properly calibrated.

ALSO speedometers vary generally +/- 5 MPH as well. So as a result most police will not pull someone over for less than 10 MPH.

And yes a 4 way stop is a STOP... so um... Stop.

Usually its 10, but they can pull you over for 1. I have passed cops going 10 over, and not get pulled over. BTW, this is on highway roads.

Now, if you are in a residential area or school zone, I would expect the limit be more strict.

Also, stopping at stop signs, what you did is commonly called a California Quick Stop. Unless the cop sees your car rock back, you didn't come to a complete stop. As stupid as you think the ticket is, its still legit.

It varies from cop to cop, town to town and state to state. A police officer can legally give you a ticket for going 1 mph over the speed limit, but that is very easy to fight in court. The general rule is 10 mph over, when the police will be most likely to give you a ticket for speeding. Police can also ticket for not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign, even if there are no other cars in sight. This is just a safety thing, they want to make sure that people are being absolutely sure that no one is coming to prevent accidents. Your best bet: take the extra two seconds that it will take to stop fully, then go. Good luck my friend.

Well, each cop is different, but I will tell you what I do.
I will stop someone between 5 to 10 mph over the speed limit. This usually depends on where the person is speeding. If they are going 5 over by a daycare (one which a kid has been hit on the road) then I will stop them. If they are on a stretch of road where I have even caught myself going a little fast though, I usually wont stop them until they are 10 mph over. 15mph is usually an automatic ticket, but if someone is being disrespectful any time I stop them, chances are they just talked themselves into a ticket at 10mph over!
I usually don't ticket not coming to a complete stop, but I will a lot of times at least stop them to have a chat with them. Especially at night, I always stop someone rolling through a stop sign, because it can be an indicator of driving drunk. It is not a stupid ticket in my opinion. Stop signs are put where they are for a reason, to keep people safe from accidents. It doesn't take much time out of your day to come to a complete stop and make sure you look good before you go. Sure beats the time you will spend either on an accident, in the hospital, or dead.
Drive safe!

school zone.....no slack.......any place else, depends how they feel that day................

ive gotten one at 7 over.

They usually don't bother you unless your are 5 M.P.H. over the limit, because it's hard for them to prove in court and any speedometer can be off plus or minus 5 M.P.H., I watch it real close in a school zone, they are strict in these areas,

The Voice of Reason
Since you always give best answer to the same person, what is the point? I is discretionary at best and highly subjective!

Just about everyone drives 5mph over the speed limit. Usually 10 over is when you will get a ticket. Unless maybe your in a school zone where its 25, and your doing like 34 or something. And it also just depends on the cop.

Lucy
You're going about this all wrong. The point at which a police officer issues a ticket is in direct correleation with the amout of times his mother hugged him as child, how hard he was hit by the other bullies in grade school, how fat his wife is and the amount of bacon he had for breakfast.

It has nothing to do with the law.

You are supposed to recieve a fine if you drive 10% over the limit, so say the speed limit is 50mpg, you wont get a ticket unless you are driving 55mph or more.
