Respect for authority
Fear
Self preservation
Belief in the laws that they obey.
Religion doesn't often enter into it. |

The one thing most athiests respect from religion is the concept of law and order, and if religion can instill that, it is a great thing. Athiests just really don't believe there is a reward or punishment for doing good or evil in the end. The majority of people need that fear of judgement to keep on the right path. |

I don't agree with your interpretation. Just because the laws are made by "God fearing men" does not make them religious by any means. Laws are not meant to have religious implications, hence the separation of church and state. Laws are simply the only way that society has to keep itself from going to hell in a handbasket.
An athiest who follows the law is not violating his or her beliefs. They are just being law abiding citizens. As for whether or not they are afraid of God or jail, I'd think nearly everyone is afraid of jail. Isn't that the whole point of having them? Why else would criminals run from the police? If they weren't afraid, they'd just jump into the back of police cars. |

Of course atheists obey the laws. You don't need to believe in a magical, invisible, super-being in the sky to know to obey the laws. That would be like saying if you don't believe that Santa is going to come down your chimney and reward you with gifts for being good or put coal in your stocking for being bad, then why do you believe in laws?
And there is plenty of evidence that JAIL is a real place. There is not one single scrap of evidence that Hell is a real place.

Laws are written by men, not God. And it's just as well, too. The idea of law is to let us all live together in a manner that will benefit everyone. Otherwise, we're all separate hunter-gatherers, and that's not a particularly comfortable lifestyle. Ergo, the sensible man obeys the law. It has nothing to do with divine vengeance. |

You're missing the point here.
An atheist does not believe in God, so obviously they wouldn't fear God. To them, it wouldn't be limited or talking big to not be afraid of something they don't believe exists. They would think it would be like being afraid of the boogie man or the tooth fairy.
They believe in the police man, because they can see and touch him. Yes, they would be afraid of the consequences of breaking the law, since they have seen others arrested. |

looks like we have a philosophical view towards man's infinite struggle w/the one we call master of the universe, all powerful, omnicient, and super human. well not only does he obey the laws ste by some God fearing men but so do you my friend. we all have a GOD we try to connect with whether it's no god or something or someone else. we're not going to play crazy and get locked up behind our personal belief systems in regards to the law of the land. some of us are crazy but not stupid. follow. now let me give you something to think about. if GOD is all powerful, super human , omnipotent, etc., etc.. why is he a jealous GOD and condemns you worshipping any other gods before him. jealousy is a totally human emotion. i guess even the old man upstairs has his limits. |

Officers they can see so yes, they obey the laws but everyone should do that regardless of how they believe, otherwise the world would be worse than it already is. |
