I have a friend who told me that he was in Chicago, and he was suddenly surrounded by police officers who accused him of matching the same description of someone who had just pulled an armed robbery.
He said they took him to their precinct and grilled him with questions. When he refused to confess to anything, they made him hold books on his head and beat him with nightsticks. He claimed everytime he said he didn't do it, they beat him and asked him again. Then they put pillows on his back and continued beating him. After 4 hours, they gave up and let him go. He said that he filed some sort of complaint, but when an investigation was opened, the Chicago Police Dept said they "lost" the videotape.
I have a lot of respect for police officers, so PLEASE tell me this guy is full of it, and explain all the holes in this story or why this incident just could not have happened. It would make me feel better, and feel that I can trust the police more.

I'm not taking sides. Ask him when this happened. I can check to see if an armed robbery did occur. Ask what District he was brought to. Chicago does not have Precincts. Anyone brought into the station under such a serious accusation would have to be documented. The dispatcher would have to be notified. It would be impossible for all records, especially a digital recording to just disappear. If this did occur, I guarantee it would have made front page headlines. |

I can't speak for Chicago PD. But all our interview rooms are recorded digitally constantly, there is no way to turn it off. All video is kept for 10 days, unless needed, then it is burned to a DVD. Only the Chief and Deputy Chief have access to the recorder.
Ask your friend for the cases number, arrest report and any marks the PD left. |

He is completely full of it. I have been in law enforcement for almost 11 years and have worked for 2 very large departments. He is full of it. |

What a crock of crap your friend has told you.
First off all interviews are now digitally recorded so there is no "tape" to lose. You may want to ask him for the incident number, and the officers badge numbers that he used to file the grievance. Plus any supporting documents from a hospital or walk in clinic. And CPD doesn't use videotape. They have also gone digital in both interview and booking procedures. So if he said he was fingerprinted ask him how hard it was to get the ink off of his hands. If he gives any kind kind of answer indicating he had to wash them or it was tough, he is lying!! The new machines only require you to lay your hands on a glass plate and are scanned. |

He is absolutely full of garbage. If he had actually been subjected to such an outrage all he would need to do is get a lawyer and broadcast it in the newspaper that he took a beating. Such stories make great news and lots of headlines. There would be such an outcry that even if the officers never heard of him they would still be prosecuted. |

Its a ridiculous story. 1st of all if they beat him for 4 hours there would of been plenty of evidence even without a video. 2nd of all armed robbery's aren't that unusual in Chicago. The officers aren't going to risk ruining their careers and life's for something that is routine for them. Your friend is full of it. |

Depending on how long it was before he told you about it, did he have any marks or injuries? I have to admit, I am a bit sceptical in this day and age. We thankfully are a bit beyond the 1930's where it was so blatant. When it does (unfortunately) happen now, it tends to be more subtle and covered up better. Whilst I agree that you are right to be sceptical, by the same token I do not think that you can dismiss what he has said out of hand. |

Not impossible, but highly unlikely. Only if he really did match the description, was in the area, gave the cops a hard time, and refused to say where he was. (Few of us know where we were, say, last April 24, but most of us know where we were an hour ago.) Even then, it's unlikely. |

You just never know. Chicago cops don't exactly have a squeky clean reputation. |

Did You Get That Memo?
 |
I wish I could say it was BS, but in this day an age of roided out cops I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand.
What should happen is a judge put the cops in the clink and see if that jogs their memory about where that tape might have been right before they "lost" it. |
