I am in the background check process of a job with a law enforcement agency. I put references as well as past employers names and numbers on my application. I received a call today from someone doing the background check and they are requiring me to call 5 people that were supervisor's or co-workers and have them call the law enforcement agency back. They are only requiring me to do this for the jobs I've held out of the state I am currently in, but I can't imagine that it would have to do with long distance phone calls. He said it expidites the process, but otherwise would they require me to contact the references and have the references call them back? I found it kind of strange.

It is possible, each agency does background checks differently. We will contact the people on the reference list and we know that they are going to say good things about the candidate so we then ask them for 5 other people and depending on what we find, we might ask that person for another 5 people so that we get a truer representation of what the candidate is really like. We do all the contacting, either by phone, my mail or in person (yes, even out of state), we don't have people call us with information. |

It seems a little odd, but then again, it's not my department. It can expedite the process because they can get some references done right away over the phone....but I would much rather be the one to contact them.
I can't say what you should do or why they're going this route but I have to agree that it's strange. |
