Background check for Police Hiring?

In my previous employer, I went to an agency and got referred to another company temporarily. When that company wanted to officially hire me, on the drug screening i came out positive for marijuana and was unable to get that job.

My question is, when conducting a background check, will they be able to find this out? This was in late 2005 early 2006, since than I have refrained from the use of marijuana. ( I have never taken any other type of drugs before )

Its been 3+ years since i "inhaled" but am never planning on doing that again.

Unless that potential job was in the public sector, eg. teaching, government, then they will most probably not find out.

Like Dave said, unless that agency was in a public sector then it's not likely to come up.
