Becoming a Police Officer... College Major?

I'm a college sophomore, and I have taken a wide variety of courses, nothing too specific.

I feel pretty confident now that I want to be a police officer, and eventually a detective, as my career (I am a writer, so that's always a side thing I have going!) but I am only 18 years old. In my state, departments usually only hire people at least 20 years 6 months old... so I have another 2 years and 6 months to go!

I was thinking I could get some kind of degree in the meantime, as I have already tried to find employment and have come up unsuccessful. (The unemployment rate in my state is pretty high.)

I wanted to know if anyone had any idea of a degree that would be helpful for a police officer? Something that could help me do my job, or teach me skills that will come in handy on patrol?

A degree in Criminal Justice will make going through the academy much easier than going with no CJ knowledge. It will not help you get a job now, however. If you're really interested in being an officer, why don't you go federal? ICE or FBI both hire at 18. You still have to get a degree in order to even really be considered. It's not required, but my cousin is with ICE and he said not many people make it in without an BA. Oh, ICE is Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Not many know about it.
