Best gun for self defense at home?

I am 20 years old almost 21 and going to be moving into a place by myself. I want to keep a gun in my new place for safety reasons in case of a break in. I currently have a large gun collection but was looking into buying a handgun since it is a lot smaller. My current guns I now own are 20 gauge Browning shotgun (regular barrel), Remington .270, Remington .243, Thompson C Arms 300 Mag (with .50 cal black powder barrel and 20 gauge shotgun barrel), 20 gauge Wild Turkey Federation Shotgun, CVA .50 muzzle loader, .50 muzzle loader (another brand I forgot), and a Browning 30-6..This are mainly used for hunting and figured none of them would be good for home defense..I am looking for a good gun for home defense that also would not be too expensive..I also have take hunter safety classes many years ago and have my license, but do I need a separate license or permit for owning a gun at home for self protection??

I like the Taurus Judge. It takes both .45 handgun ammo, and .410 shot shells.

The .410 will be much more forgiving when you are aiming under stress, and it is less likely to penetrate walls and cause a hazard to neighbors like any of your rifles would.

The handgun in general will be easier to manipulate indoors. A shotgun or rifle would be more likely to get hung up while you were swinging it.

Any of those guns you listed will be good at self defense at home. 99% of people who try to break in and see you pointing a shot gun at them will most likely leave.

I'm a big fan of Glocks, but you should get what fits you. Try a few out and see what you shoot well.

However, no gun is better home defense than good outdoor lighting.

Trooper's recommendation is good. I am thinking of getting a Taurus Judge for s&g. Anyway, a 12 gauge loaded with polyshoks is also a good choice. They are equivalent to slugs but are good for urban environments because their penetration will drop off once it hits something. Less chance of going through your wall and hitting a neighbor.

I would advise trying out different weapons and going with what feels good to you. Maybe go to an indoor range that will let you try different weapons. I am also very partial to Glocks. I own several.

Take a trip to a local shooting range and RENT several handguns to try out. The best weapon is the one YOU can actually USE for the purpose. In MOST of the US, you don't need a permit to have ANY gun in your home. You should look into a handgun safety class anyway. If I were you, I would look into a CCW permit. That would allow you to carry the handgun for defense outside your home as well.

You are sufficiently armed to protect your home and self from any sort of intruders. If any of the arms you have listed is not good enough to defend your home, no pistol is going to be better.

Unless you have combat experience, go with a short barreled shotgun. Easy to manuever. Broad shot pattern. Less likely to send a flier into some other home.

some # 2 Buchshot in the 20ga with the plug removed would pretty much take care of anything in front of you. The 12ga remington pump is traditional but since you alreadty have the 20, why buy another one.

Seems like you have adequate protection there. If you are set on getting a handgun, I would suggest the Glock 21. It is a simple, reliable weapon and moderately priced. Go to a firing range where you can rent one to try it out or any other handgun you like the feel of. Fitting a pistol to yourself is different than fitting a rifle or shotgun. Consider your choice carefully, remember if you are going to use that weapon in self-defense, you want to be comfortable with it. The stress and danger of the situation would not go well if you have a handgun that is not comfortable to utilize.

Your shot gun will be less danger to your neighbors.

For home defense its hard to beat a12 Ga. shotgun, I prefer a pump.
