Best way to become a Police Investigator.?

I am currently in the process of getting a BA in Criminal Justice in California and want to become a Police Investigator. My question to those with experience in the process and/or training of this career, is do you get selected through application during Police Academy or does it become granted in another way, like after a certain amount of time as a Patrol Officer.

(the department you pick may and likely will be different, different states different rules, different departments different policies)

You go thorough the normal hiring process for a peace officer in the state where the department you want to work for is located.
You either go to an academy first or get hired first and then attend an academy for 8 to 18 weeks. If you make it through you hit the street as a uniformed officer under the tutelage of an Field Training Officer for 6 to 8 weeks. You then work the street for between 2 to 5 years before you are allowed to take a promotion exam. Then when there are openings you get promoted and go back to the academy for detective school for 2 to 4 weeks.
Then you become a detective, working with an experienced detective for a couple of months.
Some places will promote or appoint you to detective for a heroic or special work you have done or if your father in law is the chief of police.
Most departments call criminal invesitators detectives, Some use the term investigator only for IAD or juvenile officers. Some don't.

In reality having a degree doesn't make you an investigator anymore than living in a garage makes you a car. You do your time on the streets in uniform and earned the right to take the promotional exam, you are then promoted off the list. If your time in patrol showed that you can't really find your but with two hands they will put you in some no brainer unit like Abandoned Autos. If you show some promise they may give you a shot at one of the more prestigious units. During this time they are looking at what you can actually do and could care less about your degree. Now you can take that degree across the street to the Federal side of things and they can make you an instant investigator, which tells you why street cops have issues with the feds...ha ha.
