does anyone have any information on whether an ex inmate can become a firefighter once they are released from prison

It would depend somewhat on their crime and conditions of parole... certainly, an arsonist isn't going to meet the requirements.

In California, the Department of Forestry (CALFIRE) uses CURRENT convicts, male & female volunteers during wild-fire season. They get a deal... I think it is 3 days for every day they're on the line. I ALSO recall that some of the wild-fire companies will hire those who have worked a season or two and have recommendations.
