So why didn't you have a license? Do you mean to say that you didn't have your wallet with you, thus you didn't have your license with you? Or, do you mean to say that you did something stupid prior, thus your license was suspended? If number two is the case, and the car belongs to you, they can look up your plate and see the car belongs to you, who has a suspended license. Viola. There's your probable cause. Next time, use your head.

Minimally, the officer needs to have a reasonable suspicion of illegal activity in order to pull you over, and reasonable suspicion can also be so vaguely defined as to allow random field sobriety tests in the event of holidays.

They can pull you over for whatever reason they like.. They just cannot site you unless you actually did what is was they are claiming you did. That's what happens when you drive without a license, now you won't get one for a very long time.

cops reason can be as simple as "i didnt like the look of him", once they have something on you, your plea's for "no reason" go out the window, and yes its illegal to drive without a license, otherwise why would you get one?

Yes they can pull you over for any reason at all. Have you not heard of speed traps and dui check points? I hope you can show them you really do have a license, then it will not be a big deal at all.

There are literally thousands of non-moving violations (lights out, license plate covered, not having a front plate on the vehicle, expired registration, ect).

Also, many states put driver's license information in with the license plate information. So if he ran your tag, it may have popped up the registered owner doesn't have a license and he could have stopped he based on that.

In most states when you license is revoked. Your Lic. plate is sent on on a list of vehicles to watch. If your vehicle is being operated & driver fits your description. They have all the right they need to stop you & give you a ticket. That is pretty much nation wide. You a fortunate you live where you do & only got a ticket. Where I live you get 2 days in jail along w/ a ticket $1000 fine. No exceptions.

My brother was once pulled over for speeding (Which he wasn't actually doing) and when the cop came up to the car he told my brother he was going to give a ticket for no seat belt...my brother had taken it off to get his wallet out of his hip pocket..always wears a seat belt...The guy is no longer our village cop!

You can get a ticket for driving without a licence, no matter how nice the cop is- it is still against the law.

Yes it's legal.

It's at the policeman's (or women's) discretion if they pull you over or not. If they think anything could be suspicious (even if you don't think you had any reason to cause suspicion ) they will pull you over.

Sometimes their 'sixth sense' pays off and they get more than just a driver without a license.

I can usually find a reason to pull over anyone within 30 feet. Everyone breaks traffic laws. Just because he didn't tell you the reason doesn't mean he he didn't have one.

It used to be that a cop couldn't pull you over without some good reason. But in the last 30 years or so there's been a continuous crumbling of the Bill of Rights. First the War on Drugs and now the War on Terrorism have given police rights they never had before to search without a warrant, to stop and question people with no 'probable cause', to break down doors, and to enforce the law selectively. The PATRIOT Act is the last nail in the coffin.

So 20 or 30 years ago you could go to court and say the cop had no probable cause to stop you, and you could get the ticket dismissed even though you WERE driving without a license. Today you can't..

There's somthing wrong with you ! Driving is not a RIGHT, but a privilage. You MUST have a license to drive.I cant believe that cop let you cotinue driving. My son lives in a small town in VA., and the laws there are very strict . INSURANCE ! If you cause an accident, and seriously hurt, or kill someone, how are you going to pay for it ? How can you have an automobile registered in your name, without a driver's license ? You CAN'T !!

Alright, here is some truth. There are lots of cop bashers that answered saying how they can do anything because they are cops, legal or not. But here goes. Your license plates and drivers license are considered to be public record. That means anyone (law enforcement or not) can get access to them without reason. They just have to ask. If you go to the DMV to get access, you fill out a form, pay your fee, and wait and wait and wait. The cops have instant access through their laptops in the cars. They punch in the license plates and get the info. They take that info and get your wanteds and license info. Done all the time. No suspended license or wanteds and you don't get stopped, so you don't know it happened. But it is legal and routine.

Obviously you did do something wrong you were driving without a license. Police departments get lists of suspended drivers and vehicles.

As they can check the plates of a car to see who it is registered to, and if your name is on it, you do not have a valid license, there is your reason to be pulled over. They do not need additional reasons to pull you over, had it been someone else with a valid license driving your car there would have been no problem. Considering there are computers in most police cars now, this information is just a click away. He probably had your entire driving history pulled up just from your tag numbers.

they surely can, but how did he know you didnt have a license? does he know you? were your tags expired? you must have done something, how could he have known you didnt have a license? unless you did something to make him pull you over...

They don't just randomly pull you over. They do need probable cause. Even if they say he didn't look like he was wearing a seatbelt. It is worth fighting if you don't think you did anything. Didn't he say WHY he pulled you over? They usually ask if you know why you pulled over...It's worth a try but you did drive without a license so you were wrong.

It is called proactive policing, and it is perfectly legal. Not only is it legal, it has saved countless dollars and lives when police pulled someone over for a 'violation' and found guns, drugs, or burglary tools when the driver acted suspicious or tried to run. You should have asked why you were stopped (actually if you had been paying attention, the officer TOLD you why you were stopped in the first place, because that is standard procedure). You may have not signalled a lane change, or been following too closely, or had a tail light out, or any number of valid reasons why the police can stop you.

I don't know, maybe he saw you and thought that you were under agedd.IDK how old you are so that there is my first guess. I don't know if that is legal or not. If they think that someone is suspicious then yes they can pull you over. But other than that I am not sure. I would do some research on it. But you are lucky that the only thing that you got was a ticket.

Even if you did have your licence with you and everything was legal they could still come up with 1 of 100's of reasons why they stopped you. remember they go to school for this type of thing. They could say one of your tires looked bald, or anything, most people will not try to press this issue if they did not get a ticket.
