Can I/Should I Report This Police Officer?

Hi everyone

Need some advice as to my rights and what I should do.
______________________________________...

So....

My cousin Sarah and I have NEVER been close and I don't ever see her unless she happens to be in the same pub.

She became a Police Community Support Officer some time ago and it was brought to my attention back then by other family members AND friends that Sarah has admitted to looking me up on the police computer and has been telling family and friends about my police record. Although there is nothing major on there I still don't think it is right that she has done this. At the time I didn't want to do anything as I thought "oh well I dont want to cause any problems in the family". But since then I have been told the same story by so so many people. I find it disgusting that she is doing this.

Are Police Community Support Officers allowed to use the police database?

Are Police officers of any kind allowed to look up family members?

Do I have good grounds to report her?

Thanks
Additional Details
Thank you for your answers :)

I have just filed a complaint online on the Independant Police Complaints Commisson Website.

I will also be sending my complaint via recorded post to make sure it is not over looked

I would say, yes, you have every grounds to report her. People in her job are in a position of trust and if they use and abuse that trust in any way what so ever then they shouldn't be doing that job. If you report her then this again should be in confidence with who ever takes the report from you, so i would say unless she contest this then you wouldn't have to reveal that you made the complaint in the 1st place. However if you do have to reveal what you done then you hold your head high because regardless of the family problems that this may cause - you are not the one in the wrong.

This is incredibly unprofessional of her, and I think you should definitely report her. Basically, she is looking up your record for sh*ts and giggles, and to gossip about it with your family and friends. That sort of behaviour does the police's image no good at all, and you should definitely report it - they will take it very seriously as it is a huge violation of privacy.

Well i Never!
yes you can, she is abusing the system

tom4bucs
yes - that is a misuse -
and we take 2 year renewls where we know what's 'right and wrong'

I think that this is invasion of privacy.

yes you can report her but its your choice if you want to

report her ASAP

No under confidentiality Act she is not allowed. She is not allowed to look up anybodies personal records unless she has a legible reason. I know she is totally in the wrong, but i think you should talk to her as a person, talk to her family before you go ahead and put her job at risk even though she is breaking the law.

Good luck x

Kev
She is not fulfilling her responsibilities and does need to wake up. If she is breaking your privacy chances are she is doing it with other peoples as well. The is a difference between discretion and reckless character assassination. I do not know how those in charge will respond (warning / sack) but it is an issue that is taken seriously.

I really hope that you do follow up on this because THE PIGS are supposed to protect us and they are looked as to be above us in a sense. But they go off and do some SH*T like this. REPORT THE PIGGY

1. Yes they are allowed to use computer if authorized by the departments Policy and procedures or Regulations to do so.

2. Yes can look up anyone if authorized by policy or Regulations as part of job.

3. Yes I would say you do have grounds to report her for abuse of Judicial Information records to family members.

Certain information on an police report is not available to the public for a reporting.(police reports)
With that said, the Freedoms Of Information Act allows sharing of certain generic information.
1. Name, age, race, crimes committed, dates etc.
2. Court records of guilt or innocence

Public Records are available to the extent of above #1.
All other information is considered confidential.

Amy
yes report her...you are not allowed to use such information against someone as she clearly is. She could, and should lose her job for this.

This is absolutely an abuse of Sarah's power to access records on the police system. If she has any right to use the system, I am certain it is limited to accessing relevant files for work purposes only.
You do have grounds for reporting her. But, before you do, consider the consequences. She could lose her job! You'll probably alienate some family members.
If that's ok with you, and if you can live with the inevitable consequences of having ruined a family member's career, go ahead. Tell.
The alternative would be to take the high road. Let her know that you know. Then do nothing.

troublemakr44
i think you should talk to her before you risk her job. what she is doing is wrong but maybe by just telling her you know what she is doing and that if she doesnt stop youll be forced to take action she will stop looking at your information. it would be best if you tried something yourself before getting the law involved.

Most Police Departments have rules against personal computer usage; like checking family members, gf/bf, and other people without reason. They also have rules against police officer associating with know criminals, no matter their relationship or the severity of the persons criminal past, so they are in a catch 22, they get into less trouble for checking then if caught with a person with a criminal history. Report her, do it because she was wrong for doing it, not because you are jealous of her success and your lack thereof!

First all "police" would have access to this type of information.
But anybody in this type of job would have strict regulations controlling release of same.
Do you have proof of the offence and a willing witness to sign a statement etc.
If you have the above, you could look for a apology from this person and the end of the matter.
If not go ahead and complain.

Yes you should. Look what happened here in Toledo Ohio of people looking up Joe the Plumber. He is now suing those involved.

I believe officers can look up info. on anyone. However, I'm not sure about Community Support Officers. Even if they are allowed, sharing info. w/general public is not. It's a breach of privacy. How about speaking w/her. Close or not, she's in the family. Why not ask her about what she's done and how it's upset you. Perhaps just knowing that you know will cause her to stop. Let her know what she's doing is totally unethical and she could lose her position if her superiors find out.

frankturk50
Police officers can look up anybody they can easily put it down to professional interest but PCSO'S should only be able to request checks as far as it relates to their own duties. To disclose such info as you have mentioned is a serious matter of misconduct and I would visit a police station ask to see the duty Inspector and make a formal complaint.

pirate_princess
Just found this site, can't believe what I saw, type a name in and it gives you EVERY last piece of information about that person! http://gov-reports.net/uk-search.php?search=UKCRIM&title=Criminal%20Records, can't believe such a site is allowed what with data protection etc.

Still, someone abusing their powers (not that community support have many), in their job is not allowed, don't let it go.

awphotog
Absolutely report her.
She is abusing her position and as a PCSO she will be sacked for abuse of the systems and her position.

Report her to the Professional Standards Department at your local Police HQ. This is a total abuse of power and she could be doing it to other people as well as yourself.

Officers have been fired for doing exactly what you described. You can get her fired. If you want to.

you could report her, but think of the repercussions.
better I think to give her a word of warning, as in stop it, or I WILL report you.

lizanull
You ABSOLUTELY should report this worthless P.O.S., what she's done is abuse her access to police records and she can be prosecuted for it.

I hope that she IS prosecuted for it.
