Can I become a rural Sheriff's deputy even though I was raised in the city?

I have wanted to be a cop for a while, and recently I've become interested in doing law enforcement in more rural areas.
I've looked at recruiting websites and I meet the requirements... but my question is, will the fact that I come from a different side of America make it hard for people in rural American to accept me in a law-enforcement role?

It shouldn't be a problem.
If you pass all of the tests, background, medical, psychological and academy, then you're good to go.
Because of your background, you'll be bringing a little different perspective to the job. As you go through your field training process (after academy graduation), you'll be introduced and trained in the aspects of rural county patrol.
A big part of the job is how you relate to people - so take that into account as you go through your training.

Shouldn't effect anything. As long as you attempt to "fit in" to the community, you shouldn't have any problem. I'm sure your commanding officer will assist and direct you. Good luck! |
